Liwonde National Park boat safari

Liwonde National Park is perhaps the most popular of all the game parks in Malawi. It is ±100 miles (160 km) north of Blantyre. It is a small park of only 220 sq miles (580 sq km). With a beautiful riverine setting and teeming wildlife offering thrilling safaris. Wildlife viewing is enhanced because the River Shire flows along its western border. Therefore; allowing boat safaris. As well as the usual ones on foot or in 4x4s.

Wildlife includes quite large numbers of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles. Lion, cheetah and wild dog have also been reintroduced into Liwonde. Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck. Leopards, hyena and black rhino are also occasionally spotted.

Birdlife is exceptionally varied. The river attracts fish eagles and weaver birds build their nests in the thin woodland. Plus easy viewing of Pel’s fishing owl, Boehm’s bee-eaters, Lilian’s lovebirds, and Livingstone’s flycatcher.

Best time to visit Liwonde National Park

The best time to visit the park is during the dry season from April to October. During this time, the bush is dry and open. Making the game easier to spot.

There are three distinct seasons in the area:

November – March
When the rains begin, the conditions are generally hot and wet. Humidity peaks during January and February, and the bush is thick, making it difficult to spot the game. However, it is particularly beautiful. As it goes from a dust bowl into an emerald paradise during this time.

April – August
Temperatures are cooler and rainfall drops during this period. It is advisable to take warmer clothing for activities during the early morning and evenings or on the river. Particularly in July and August.

September – October
Temperatures are extremely high and it is very hot and dry during these months. The landscape is sparse and dry with limited vegetation cover. But game viewing is amazing.
