Etosha Mountain Lodge

Etosha Mountain Lodge

The classically Namibian Etosha Mountain Lodge is in the heart of the Etosha Heights Private Reserve. The reserve offers 60,000 hectares of unspoiled wildlife, landscapes, and tranquillity. It is also a conservation success story. Protecting the animals that live here to ensure the wildlife rivals the best. It is now as game rich as the neighboring Etosha, except without the crowds. So you’ll have undisturbed wildlife experiences. Seeing lion, cheetah and many of Namibia’s fascinating desert species. But the reserve is probably most famous for its strong population of both black and white rhino. It is truly a place to reconnect with nature.

The lodge overlooks vast plains and hills in every direction. At the center of camp is a bright and breezy ‘lapa’ area. You’ll find the restaurant and bar as well as plenty of sitting areas, just waiting for a sun downer cocktail under the thatch. There’s also a well stocked wine cellar, a curio shop and a swimming pool. And no matter where you choose to relax, the panoramas stretching ahead are magnificent. Think dramatic skies, vast plains, and wildlife wandering to and fro, right in front of your eyes.

Etosha Heights Private Reserve Conservation and Sustainability

The wildlife roams freely between Etosha Heights Private Reserve and the Etosha National Park. The reserve partakes in various conservation efforts and projects that are currently operational and many more still to come. The main goal and vision is to encourage and develop sustainable Eco-friendly tourism. All to the benefit of the area, animals as well as the community. When you visit, you will be directly supporting the following Natural Selection conservation initiatives.

It is a Black Rhino Custodian area and there is an anti-poaching team on site. Therefore it has become famous for it’s incredible rhino sightings. Another species that flourishes at Etosha Heights is the giraffe, and they support the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.  Elusive mountain zebras, kudus and lions hide in the dolomite hills. And the waterholes attract large numbers of giraffe, antelope and elephant. Enjoy the peace and solitude that comes from staying in a private reserve, far from tourist crowds.

Another project is The Khomas Environmental Education Programme (KEEP). KEEP focuses on urban primary schools within impoverished areas. It addresses the need to connect these children to nature and develop an interest in the environment and in becoming responsible members of local and global communities.

Integrated with the national school curriculum, the program includes hands on experience in the bush, allowing the beauty of Namibia to captivate these young minds. The impact and excitement from the young participants is almost tangible.

Etosha Mountain Lodge Activities

Game Drives

Head out early morning or late afternoon on one of the vehicles to enjoy a game drive around Etosha Heights Private Reserve. Track the elusive black and white rhino while staying on the lookout for the big cats of the Reserve. There is plentiful plains game and excellent birding.

Children of all ages welcome. A private vehicle is required for families with children under 10.

Night Drives (on request)

After an early dinner and depending on the weather, night drives on the reserve are also possible. Different from day game drives by that you stand a chance to see some of the nocturnal species that roam the reserve. With a heavy duty spotlight and expert guide you will uncover all the lesser seen nocturnal animals that like to wake up after dark. Catch them out of their burrows, and on the hunt. This is night time action at its very best!

Guided Walks (seasonal)

Guided walks with a armed, trained guide are offered to the more adventurous. This is a completely different experience to a game drive as it immerses you in nature at ground level. From tracking rhino spoor to discovering birds, insects, trees and plants – you’ll soon uncover what makes this wild Eco system so diverse.

Children aged 12 years and over may take part in a walking safari.

Photography Hide

A double story photography hide looks out onto a large natural waterhole with an abundance of game and bird life frolicking throughout the day. The waterhole is also well lit up at night. Perfectly positioned to capture incredible sightings it has two amazing vantage points. The upper level offers magical birds eye views to take in the entire landscape, with wheelchair access and a toilet. The lower level is level with the water so you can look directly into the eyes of animals as they drink. The toes of elephants sometimes get in the way, and the dainty tips of their trunks dance in front of you.

The hide, set up for serious photographers, has a charging station, an area for gear storage and even a day bed for guests on a serious photography stake-out! Beverages and snacks can be bought to you.

Spa Treatments (additional cost)

If you are in need of some serious time out, then one of the spa treatments is your perfect escape. A professional therapist will treat you in between your game drives and wildlife adventures. This is safari self indulgence at its best.

When to visit Etosha Mountain Lodge

The different seasons bring very different experiences to Etosha Heights Private Reserve. Each has its own charms and challenges. Winter (May to September) brings dry landscapes and abundant game viewing opportunities as the dwindling waterholes slowly evaporate into the crisp, clear air, and animals congregate around them.

In contrast, summer (October to April) features brief but dramatic thunderstorms that turn the land lush and green. Higher grass and fuller waterholes make game viewing a little harder during this time of year. But you can still expect to enjoy a diverse cast of the animal kingdom.

How to get to Etosha Mountain Lodge

The lodge is 470 km from Windhoek, 150km from Outjo and 97km from Kamanjab. From Windhoek, switch to a light aircraft to fly to the airstrip. Or, rent a 4×4 and drive there. Please note that the routes are not suitable for sedan cars.
