Creating seamless travel in Africa since 2004
A family vacation in Namibia is a fantastic adventure. Especially for active children and teenagers. Namibia is a vast country with some incredible family vacation spots. Safari in Etosha National Park, visit the German town of Swakopmund to quad bike on the dunes or kayak with seals. And climb the giant dunes in Sossusvlei.
Keep in mind if you want to drive around the country, it will entail distances so children should be happy during ‘road’ trips. We recommend hiring a 4×4 with high ground clearance. This means you sit higher and the vehicle will handle the gravel roads better. When planning your Namibia family itinerary, we try to limit your driving time to 4 – 5 hours per day. Also, we think it is better to stay in one place for 2-3 nights (or more) than 1 night in many places. Especially with children.
The dry season (May to October) is the best time if seeing wildlife is a priority. This is because the animals gather in large numbers around the permanent waterholes in Etosha. Making game viewing easier. The weather is cool and dry. The days are beautiful and warm. The early mornings and evenings can get cool.
The wet/green season (November to April) transforms the landscape lush and green. There are fewer tourists and lower price. This is the best time for birding. The days and nights are hot. With brief afternoon thunderstorms which offer great respite (if you are lucky!).
It is a good idea to take malaria tablets and use sunscreen if you are visiting the north (Etosha) and northeastern region (Zambezi). The Zambezi region is Namibia’s Okavango Delta and was called the Caprivi Strip before.
There are many family-friendly holiday accommodation options in Namibia. Keep in mind the family units and the best spots get booked early, especially for the July/August peak season.
