Benguerra Island is approximately 9 kilometres x 5 kilometres and has about 2000 inhabitants. It lies some 14 kilometers north east of Vilanculos, the nearest town and site of the international airport. Benguerra is famous for its unspoiled white beaches, remarkable dive sites. Azura Marlin Beach has a fully equipped PADI 5 Star Dive Center. Fishing is a highlight here, with a dedicated center offering tag-and-release adventures in waters known for the prized Black Marlin. Long, quiet beach walks and a variety of ocean based activities are on offer.

Nestled on a one kilometer stretch of untouched beachfront, the property features just 10 stylish air-conditioned villas. Blending modern luxury with traditional African and Portuguese influences. Each villa is thoughtfully designed to offer privacy and spectacular ocean views. Azura Marlin Beach villas offer elevated views of the turquoise waters and direct beach access.

Spacious and light-filled, all villas include a dedicated butler-host and have been created to immerse guests in the breathtaking natural surroundings of Benguerra Island. The 6 x Beach Villas (100m² each) have king or twin beds with romantic netting, and indoor and outdoor showers. Each villa is a tranquil retreat with a private deck for soaking in the island’s beauty.

The 3 x Beach Villa Grandes (132m²) provide more relaxation space. They feature all the comforts of the Beach Villas and are further enhanced with private plunge pools. Offering an extra touch of luxury and privacy for your ultimate relaxation.

Villa Vista

Villa Vista is the premier family unit at Azura Marlin Beach (380m²). Providing an exclusive retreat for families or couples traveling together. The villa features two connected en-suite Beach Villas, linked by a central lounge and dining area. It offers the same features as the Beach Villas. It includes an indoor entertainment area with dining and lounge spaces. Plus a private pool and beach side sala, offering privacy and stunning ocean views.

Villa Vista can accommodate 4 x adults and 4 x children.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Set sail for a private sunset extravaganza on a traditional East African sail boat. Let down your hair and leave behind your shoes. As you step onto the wooden deck to see the islands from a different perspective. Sip on a delicious cocktail as the wind catches the sails. The ocean laps against the bow. The skies are painted in warm tones and the sun sinks into the sea. Your first dhow trip is complimentary.

Snorkeling

Immerse yourself in the underwater wonders of 2-Mile Reef. This world-acclaimed site is set in a protected Marine Reserve making it a paradise for throngs of sea life. The sunlit, warm waters ensure you have excellent visibility and exquisite sightings of bright fish, turtles and smaller rays. Suitable for all levels of experience and fun for groups of all ages. Be transported by a reef ecosystem where no two days are alike. The round trip is approximately 2 hours.

Discover the wonders of our resort’s doorstep snorkeling spot, accessible by boat or a short walk into water. The shallow seagrass beds are a haven for marine life, where you can spot camouflaged cuttlefish, colourful sea slugs, stingrays, and a variety of reef fish. Depending on the season and tides, you might even catch a glimpse of a few seahorses.

Kayaking and Sups

Kayaks and Sups are available for your pleasure at any time. Please ask the water sports center for paddles and safety equipment.

Horse Riding

Ride along the beautiful shoreline, traverse the island, or experience ocean swimming on horseback. It’s a short, enjoyable 5-minute boat ride to the stables on the north of the island. The guides and well-trained horses will delight in taking you on sightseeing outrides to explore a variety of locations at a peaceful pace. Take in the splendor of the unspoiled night sky from a comfy beanbag, informed by a local expert. Guided Island Hop

Enjoy a combination of some of the best activities Azura Marlin Beach have to offer. Traveling by boat, you will stop off at several breathtaking island highlights. Including infinite views from the top of Bazaruto Dune. Tidal Pansy Island with shells dotted along the white sandy strip. Snorkeling off 2-Mile reef in warm waters teeming with fish, turtles and rays. Finally rounding off a perfect day at North Point for a scenic picnic lunch set-up. Dolphin and Whale Watching

Every year, Humpback Whales make a long and arduous annual migration from the cold waters of the Antarctic to the warm waters of the Equator to give birth. Passing through the Mozambique channels between July and October. Providing incredible sightings as they frolic in the warm waters around the island. Experience the rare privilege of observing these majestic giants going about their natural behavior.

Dolphins are around all year round. The site is known to be an important nursery area for bottlenose and humpback dolphins.

Dugong spotting

Visit the last remaining population of these majestic marine mammals in the West Indian Ocean. Where they frolic year round in the aquamarine waters. Called the “mermaids of the sea” Dugongs gather on the reefs where they gently graze on sea grass. Making it possible for you drift close and marvel at these peaceful and awe inspiring creatures.

Fishing

Some of the best big game, reef and bill fishing in the Indian Ocean, including a variety of species and some big scale-tippers. Open to all levels of experience. You can look forward to hooking various sought after species including Black Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Bonito, King/Queen Mackeral, Prodigal Son, Wahoo, Dorado, Barracuda and Giant Trevally (often up to 25kgs). Trawling with the local guides gives you a great day out on the water.

Or join a local expert for a guided land-based fishing excursion, just a 15-minute stroll up the beach from the resort. Try your luck casting into the waters and reel in some impressive catches, including giant trevallies, kingfish, barracuda, queen mackerel, and bonito.

Scuba Diving

The various sites within the Bazaruto Archipelago offer some of the most sublime diving in Mozambique. Colorful corals host a diversity of marine life including turtles, moray eels, several species of rays and rich variety of fish. When to visit

You can expect amazing warm and sunny weather year round as Benguerra Island is one of 10 countries aligned along the Tropic of Capricorn. Tropical climate with little temperature variation between summer and winter. Resulting in year round ideal weather.

Rainfall is generally restricted to the mainland with the islands receiving very little rainfall. Although some showers can occur between November and February. These are usually short, sharp bursts, often at night, helping to cool the very hot temperatures of the summer months.

Ocean temperatures are comfortably warm in the summer months and can reach 28/29°C (84°F). In winter, it still remains warm enough for swimming (24/25°C or 77°F). So everyday is a beach day!

It is therefore clear why the Bazaruto Archipelago is a such a serious contender as a year round popular holiday destination!

This is the peak of the hot and wet season, with some potential for gusty winds. Enjoy balmy days on the beach and watch out for high UV.

April – June

The rains are dissipating, and the temperatures are beginning to ease. Perfect weather for island activities, and cruising along the ocean.

July – September
17 – 29 °C | 63 – 84 °F
The coolest months of the year, but still very comfortable daytime temperatures. The humpback whales arrive along the coast on their migratory path.

October – December
21 – 33 °C | 70 – 91 °F
Perfect beach-going weather. Clear skies, smooth water, and great temperatures. Spend your days snorkeling or diving in the clear water.

How to get to Azura Marlin Beach

The nearest airport is Vilanculos International Airport on the Mozambique mainland.

From Johannesburg:
There are daily flights from Johannesburg International airport (OR Tambo), at approximately 80 minutes flight time.

From Kruger:
Flights are also available from Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, allowing for an excellent ‘bush and beach’ combination with many lodges in the Greater Kruger area. From July to January, these flights are direct. During the rest of the year, the flights will route via Johannesburg.

From Maputo:
There are scheduled return flights between Maputo (MPM) and Vilanculos (VNX).

From Vilanculos:
It is a 8 minute scenic helicopter transfer to Benguerra Island.
