The Midlands Meander is a beautiful region in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It stretches from just beyond Mooi River in the north. Hilton in the south. Karkloof in the east. And the foothills of the Drakensberg in the west. It is an easy one-hour drive from Durban and four and a half hours on the N3 highway from Johannesburg. The Midlands can be hot and wet in summer, with average temperatures up to 30 °C. Winters are cool and dry with average temperatures of 6 °C; sometimes with snow and frost.

Nottingham Road

Nottingham Road is known as the ‘heart’ of the Midlands Meander. Horse riding; including polo and mock fox hunting; are a great attraction. Trout fishing is yet another of the magnetic charms; with its well-stocked waters. The famous local brewery; Nottingham Road Brewing Company; and Bierfassl Restaurant and Pub (Austrian) are also very popular attractions.

Howick

Howick is another hot spot in the Midlands. Known as the place of many waterfalls because it is here that the uMngeni River and its tributaries tumble down gorges and over precipices on a journey to the Indian Ocean.

Albert Falls Dam

The Albert Falls Dam is rated as one of the best bass fishing dams in the world. It is a mere 20kms from Pietermaritzburg. The area boasts an abundance of bird life. Game viewing enthusiasts have a choice of seeing nature on foot or; from game viewing vehicles. Amongst the scenic views and cultural attractions; popular family activities include water skiing, parasailing, canoeing, and fishing.

Boston and Bulwer
