White Lions
The White Lions of the Timbavati have become the subject of much interest and debate. The story has been told by several people. Most notable of whom was Mr. Chris McBride. He has published two books about the phenomenon: The White Lions of the Timbavati and Operation White Lion. Chris was the son of Timbavati member Cyril McBride. The white lions were first sighted by Cyril McBride’s daughter Lanice van den Heever in October 1975.
There have been various “spiritual” powers attributed to the white lions. Many people were and still believe that these lions are a different species. The truth is that this is a natural phenomenon that occurs due to “leucism”.
They have become a bit of a rare sighting of late. But the great news in February 2026, is there is a new cub of about 3 months in the Timbavati. This is the 1st cub born in the area in over a decade so we are all hoping it will survive.
