The Karoo is a vast area (500,000 square kilometers) in South Africa and you often don’t even know your tour is going there! That is because the Karoo covers parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and the south western sections of the Free State. Our scheduled tours will most likely cover the Karoo in the Garden Route or via the Cape West Coast.
We highly recommend the Karoo for self-drive trips (with a hire vehicle). Its is best enjoyed by taking the back roads. However, the secret to enjoying the Karoo is to slow down. Drink in the silence, tranquillity and spectacular landscapes. Take the time to enjoy the hospitality of the Karoo.
A land of rolling mountains, and vast plains with small towns and villages dotted around and no big cities (comparatively). Therefore, once the sun goes down, a dramatic view of millions of stars is fully revealed. The night sky is phenomenal. The Milky Way is revealed in all its splendor and the distinctive Southern Cross, Orion’s Belt and Dagger, plus the menacing shape of Scorpio are strewn across the sky in views to the distant galaxies. The Karoo hosts the largest observatory in the southern hemisphere.
