Activities on offer at Medjumbe Private Island
A paradise for romantic escapades, ocean thrills, and natural treasures both above and below the water. The startling beauty of the Quirimbas Archipelago comes with a sense of extraordinary adventure. The untouched marine environment allows for constant new discoveries; whatever your passion is. Set sail for adventure, cruising alongside majestic whales or towards a hypnotic sunset. Bird watchers can head to the island’s tidal pools to spot exotic and rare bird species. Enjoy the many Palaearctic migrants and waders that frequent the area. Nature lovers can spend time exploring the island’s pristine shores.
The underwater conditions here are excellent. Warm all year; the water temperature hovers between 25 to 29 degrees Celsius. The average visibility of 20 meters; reaches as far as 50 meters in summer. The vibrant coral reefs and bountiful marine life in this part of the Indian Ocean; are only accessible from Medjumbe Island Resort.
Dolphins are frequently encountered here while Humpback Whales can be sighted between August and October. Leatherback, Loggerhead, and Green Turtles are often seen in the water. They come ashore to lay their eggs on the sandy island beaches; sometimes right in front of the beach chalet rooms.

Diving – Quirimbas Archipelago
Medjumbe offers some of the finest diving in the world with untouched coral reefs and an astounding diversity of marine species. A dazzling array of fish, from Moray Eels and Stingrays to Barracuda, Kingfish, and other pelagic gamefish can be seen while diving here.
Experience the magic of scuba diving in Mozambique, whether you are a novice or accomplished diver. A range of diving courses is offered at Medjumbe. The experienced diving instructor coordinates the diving courses and plans every diving trip; taking care of all the details.
Dive sites offer a range of diving experiences that is simply breathtaking. Taking in fringing reefs, coral banks, and vertical and sloping reef walls. On shallower dives (8-15m), you are likely to see resident reef fish. Some of these include Sweetlips, Pufferfish, Angelfish, and Triggerfish. Anemones filter the waters with the resident clownfish often insight. You may also see turtles making their way out to deeper waters.
On deeper wall dives (up to 40 meters); you will encounter species such as Napolean Wrasse, Groupers, Black and White Tip Reef Sharks, Snappers, and Unicorn Fish. Some examples of deeper dives are Sambi Sambi, the Edge of Reason, or Cliffs of Insanity. Here you can experience the feeling of flight as the wall gives way to deep blue waters beyond. As Medjumbe’s waters are so little explored; there are always new diving sites to discover. They are often named after the guests who discover them.
One thing you will be guaranteed on any dive at Medjumbe is that very few people have ever dived here before you.
Fishing around Medjumbe
Around the Quirimbas, deep water is accessed close to the islands. This means one doesn’t have to travel far for thrilling encounters with big game fish. The protected waters around Medjumbe produce some of the most exciting gamefish to catch. Species such as Kingfish, Barracuda, Dorado, Queenfish, Serra, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and Sailfish.
The archipelago has a strong conservation policy of tag and release that ensures sustainability, and many a prize catch.
One of the world’s most renowned fishing destinations is accessible from the Quirimbas, St Lazarus Banks. A sea mountain 20 x 30 km in extent, rises from 2,4 km deep to within six meters of the ocean surface; bringing together a fascinating combination of marine life.
The season is pretty much year-round. Big game and heavy tackle fishing are at their best in the summer months. This is between September and April. Sailfish peak season is usually in winter. This is between May and September.
Water Sports at Medjumbe Private Island
Dhow sailing boat lessons offer couples an invigorating bonding experience. The option of both taking up the challenge of mastering traditional techniques; or relaxing onboard and cheering on their partner as a team of skippers explains how to work the ropes, check for wind direction, and control the sail and steer.
