Angama Amboseli

Amboseli lodge with great view of Kilimanjaro

Angama Amboseli is an intimate lodge in the heart of the 5,700 acre private Kimana Sanctuary and the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro (Kili). It is set within a forest of towering fever trees where some of Africa’s last Super Tuskers roam. These are elephants with tusks so large they sweep along the ground as they walk. Angama Amboseli is a gentle start or finish to any East African safari.

The design concept draws inspiration from the two ‘giants’ of the landscape – the elephants and Kili. With cues taken from the monochromatic and industrial 60s and 70s — a time when Amboseli had just hit the map. It’s bold and elegant with rounded edges and curves. Rough textures on the outside and a calming sanctuary inside. With views from everywhere, Fermob rocking chairs, playful details, and the perfect balance of just enough, but not too much.

The main Guest area offers flexible indoor-outdoor dining with a baraza (raised platform) to wind down the days by the fire. Telling stories with a drink in hand or marshmallows for roasting. The nearby Studios house a Safari Shop, Games Room, Art gallery showcasing local Kenyan art, Weaving Studio and a Photographic Studio. Where guests can edit their images and rent large camera equipment, perfect for capturing Amboseli’s iconic scenes.

The Mnara is a special viewing tower built for watching the elephants where guests can eat, relax, enjoy a sundowner. All while seeing plenty of wildlife, and take in the views of Kimana, the Chyulu Hills, and of course Kilimanjaro.

For cooling off, watching the mountain or a little elephant theater, the raised rim flow swimming pool features a drinking trough just below. Made specially for resident herds that frequent this area to drink.

Angama Amboseli area

Kimana Sanctuary is the first community conservancy established in Kenya, and is owned by 844 Masai family members. The Sanctuary boasts the greatest habitat diversity and wildlife density in the area. Attracting scores of eland, reedbuck, warthogs in their hundreds, along with giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Even the elusive leopard, cheetah and serval can be seen here along with many species of birds. Elephants are the real stars here as large breeding herds move in procession through the Sanctuary. There is a good chance you will see one of the famed Super Tuskers. (elephants whose tusks weigh more than 100lbs each)

Amboseli National Park (derived from the Masai word for ‘salty dust’, is just a 45 minute drive from the lodge. Which guests can enjoy as a half or full day excursion with a picnic lunch at a private Angama spot. One of the best places in Africa to see huge herds of elephants marching single file across dusty pans. Or having a bath in the dry lake beds. In the savanna or woodlands, guests may spot lion or cheetah. While in the wetlands, hippo, flamingo and some of its other 400 odd species of birdlife can be found.

The entrance to Angama Amboseli is located at the ‘pinch point’. All that remains of a centuries old migratory path connecting Amboseli National Park to the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo West National Park. Supported by the Sheldick Wildlife Trust, this portion of the corridor is just 85 meters wide at its narrowest. Running between agricultural land and across a busy highway. Making it a striking example of human and wildlife co-existence. The sights and sounds of the neighboring communities and farms that guests may encounter, highlight the complexities of conservation in the 21st century.

With exclusive traversing rights and unrestricted game viewing, days move at your own pace. Wake up in the early hours of the morning for a ‘pyjama safari’ when the views of Kili are at their best. Or enjoy a lovely sleep in. Stepping onto your private deck to enjoy a cup of Kenyan coffee surrounded by the Sanctuary’s abundant wildlife. As Kimana is a private conservancy, guests can enjoy walking safaris and night game drives. Guests have complete flexibility with mealtimes, and partake in the wonderful activities. Making for a truly relaxing safari.

Game Drives

Traditionally, game drives take place in the mornings and late afternoons. But at Angama Amboseli you can safari at nearly any time of day. With intimate sightings, permitted off-roading and no limitations to the times and duration of your safari, you may feel the Sanctuary is all yours.

As you move through the open plains and dense forests, you’ll witness Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, zebra, giraffe, eland and a thriving population of warthogs. With binoculars provided in each vehicle and Suite, keep them close. As you will encounter an array of bird life and may even see lion, cheetah or the elusive leopard that lives near the stream.

The search for some the last genetic links to Africa’s Super Tuskers will take you through the Sanctuary’s marsh and Tortilis woodlands. And may even lead you through neighboring conservancies and into Amboseli National Park itself. These majestic giants have tusks that weigh nearly 100lbs and scrape the ground as they walk.

There’s always nibbles and a refrigerated cooler box on board. So you never have to worry about going hungry or thirsty on a drive.

Angama Guides are natural storytellers, interpreting their surroundings in a way that immerses our guests in the natural world. All guiding team members have a Bronze certification from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. And a few of them have completed their Silver certificate. During game drives, your Guide will amaze you with their knowledge and stories. As they learn more about your interests, they will customize your safari experience to meet your hopes and expectations as best as they can.

Vehicles seat a maximum of six guests, two per row, plus one in the front passenger seat if needed. Should you prefer, private safari vehicles can be booked in advance for half or full days.

Pajama Safari

As the dawn chorus gently awakens you, roll out of bed and into the vehicle in your pajamas (or pyjamas). To witness Kili awaken from her slumber. Bring your best sleepwear for a memorable photo op atop your vehicle or settle under the blankets with a hot cup of coffee for a different type of ‘pajama party’.

Night Drives

As dusk descends, leave the lodge for a chance to marvel at the wondrous night sky in search of the unique nocturnal wildlife found here. Bat-eared fox, bush babies, porcupine, nightjars, spring hares and more. Under the blanket of stars, children can enjoy a picnic dinner then return to the lodge just before bedtime. Parents can enjoy some quiet time together over dinner as one of the mothers on staff gladly looks after the children in their Suite.

Walking Safari

Led by your expert Guide and an Askari (a member of the security team), on foot is an enchanting way to experience a safari. They have incredible knowledge of the terrain, flora and fauna of this little oasis. Follow animal pathways and tracks. Get close to the resident eland, zebra and giraffe. And observe the smaller inhabitants like antlions and dung beetles up close. Inhale the scents on the crisp air. And absorb the melodic bird calls as you walk through the Fever Tree Forest

It can be an easy walk, ideal for families, or you can explore for longer if that suits your mood. It’s advisable to set out earlier, before the heat builds up. Allowing you to immerse yourself in Amboseli’s distinctive ecosystem at a relaxed pace before you return to the lodge for breakfast.

Wellness and Relaxation

In addition to your safari adventures, be sure to slow down and catch your breath. Chill out in your rocking chair as you watch Kili play hide and seek through the clouds. Pamper yourself with a massage on your Suite’s verandah. Enjoy the lush Sanctuary views from the raised rim flow circular swimming pool. The local elephants may even visit to quench their thirst from the trough below. And if you are craving some movement, enjoy your personal gym-in-a-bag as you work out from the privacy of your Suite verandah.

Maasai Weaving

Follow the singing and soft laughter through the Safari Shop to the Weaving Studio. Where you will find the Maasai Mamas crafting beautiful pieces of jewellery and home ware. From locally sourced sisal and raffia. Traditionally, Maasai women stay at home while the men work. But these Mamas use their creativity and skill to help provide for themselves and their families. The Mamas would be delighted to help you start twisting, knotting and threading your own piece.

Conservation Experiences

For those wanting to learn more about how their stay is making a difference in supporting conservation, we invite you to spend time with Angama Amboseli’s partner, the Big Life Foundation. Who manage and protect the Sanctuary on behalf of its owners — the 844 Maasai family members. During your stay, you can interact with various members of Big Life’s team and witness the work they do to protect wildlife, secure habitat, prevent human-wildlife conflict and support communities.

There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi to Kimana airfield or Amboseli National Park with Safarilink. Private charters are also welcome at the Sanctuary’s airfield, whether to or from Mara or Nairobi. It is an easy 3h30min drive on a paved road from Nairobi to the gate.

A Typical Stay at Angama Amboseli ↓

Day 1:

Arriving at Kimana’s private airfield, your first glimpse of Angama Amboseli is the sweeping canvas fly sheets tucked into a verdant Fever Tree forest. After a welcome tour and settling into your Suite, enjoy a delicious lunch on the patio of the guest area. Then get ready for your first bumble in the Sanctuary. A stop for sundowners to toast the first day with Mount Kilimanjaro is necessary, followed by a lantern lit dinner back at the Guest Area. And maybe a night cap under the stars around the Baraza.

Day 2:

Wake up to the sun illuminating Kili and after an early breakfast, depart for a full day safari in Amboseli National Park. As you leave, visit the ‘pinch point’ — the smallest segment of a critical wildlife corridor. Spend the day exploring the Park’s famous marshlands and dry lake bed looking for Super Tuskers. After a picnic lunch at a private Angama site, return to the lodge in time for a visit to the Studios. Dinner is served on the private patio of your Guest Suite as the moon rises slowly over Kili.

Day 3:

Start your day with a gentle guided walk around the Sanctuary, learning about the fauna and flora endemic to the ecosystem. A surprise picnic breakfast awaits under a Fever Tree. Returning to the lodge, enjoy an in-suite massage or try your hand at watercolor painting on your patio. Take a lazy lunch at the pool and spend the afternoon watching the ellies pass by. End the day with sundowners at the Mnara and a night drive before or after your private dinner in the Gallery.

Day 4:

Your Butler gently wakes you with coffee before first light to catch your sunrise hot air balloon flight. Float along with Kili, admiring the views below before touching down for a champagne breakfast. A much needed siesta and lunch are followed by an afternoon with conservation partner, Big Life Foundation. Visit HQ for control room and camera trap monitoring. Or go out with ranger patrols and canine tracking units. Enjoy your final evening sharing stories over a delicious dinner in the guest area.

Day 5:

At dawn, roll out of bed and straight onto the awaiting vehicle for a signature Pyjama Safari. Let the Photographic Studio capture the moment of you posing (or dancing) with Kili in the background. Back at the lodge, it’s time to freshen up and pack before breakfast in the guest area and a gentle drive to the airfield for your onward flight.
