Mahali Mzuri Sustainability & Community Upliftment
The Olare Motorogi Conservancy is a part of one of four established conservancies bordering the northern edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Together they cover a total area of 63,000 hectares in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem.
The other three conservancies are Olare Orok, Mara North, and Naboisho. Together all are helping to increase the protected area of the ecosystem by nearly 50%. Since 2006 a unique land management structure has been developed in the conservancies. With a dual aim of extending the protection afforded to wildlife in the National Reserve to an even greater area. While directly supporting the needs of some 1,550 Maasai families.
The basic concept of these conservancies is to protect the land from over-tourism and development. Of course, the wildlife also needs to be protected by compensating the farmers whose livestock are killed by the wildlife. Both of these naturally add to the guest experience. Furthermore, it guarantees a fair income to every landowning member. While allowing tourism to contribute to the sustainability of the conservancies.
Today it can be seen how both the Maasai community and safari guests are enjoying the true benefits of conservation of this land in a relationship that will see the ecosystem protected for many years to come.
There are no fences between the Masai Mara and Olare Motorogi, so there is fantastic game viewing to be enjoyed all year.
Community projects
Working with generous, individual guest donors, Mahali Mzuri has worked hard to enhance the standard of living in the local communities. Their efforts have centered on the key pillars of Education, Water and Sanitation and Health.
One of the biggest success stories is the development and ongoing support of the local school for 300 students, aged three to 15 years old. It’s now complete with a dining hall, computer lab, accommodation, and toilet facilities. As well as a school meal program and rainwater harvesting system aimed at combatting malnutrition.
Mahali Mzuri are proud members of Pack for a Purpose. This initiative allows travelers to make a lasting impact in the community at their travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact on the lives of the local children and families.
Mahali Mzuri is currently supporting the Enkenju – Enkoirien Primary School, located about 4kms from the Mahali Mzuri camp in NAROK county. The school currently houses 120 students, aged between 4-14 years. Donations from local businesses have helped to fund essential items such as solar lights, computers, and printers. While guests have provided stationery including; books, pens, pencils, beads for bead making, maps, and dictionaries.
All contributions are a big help towards encouraging young children to go to school for formal education. Make your contribution and see what supplies are needed for the Mahali Mzuri project/projects.
Activities at Mahali Mzuri
Naturally, you are here for the amazing wildlife that can be seen not only in the Masai Mara but right here in camp! In between, you’ll be wining and dining and have the most amazing experience. From bush BBQs to champagne picnics to sundowners. It just doesn’t get better than this!
When to visit Mahali Mzuri
For game viewing the Olare Motorogi Conservancy has abundant wildlife year round. The best time to view the migration will depend on the climatic conditions that year. In the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, you can expect to see the herds arrive anytime from July to September. They depart again around November for the return journey to the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Kenya’s position straddling the equator means there isn’t a huge amount of variation in temperature throughout the year. You can expect average highs of about 30°C/86°F in the months from December to March. During the height of the migration, there are somewhat cooler temperatures. Due to its elevation temperatures in the evening do drop to around 15°C/59°F. However, it rarely gets much colder than this.
Getting there
The best way to arrive is by plane from the city’s Wilson Airport which serves domestic destinations within Kenya. We can arrange transfers between the international and domestic airports for you. Both scheduled and charter airlines operate from Wilson Airport and flights to the region take about 1 hour. Olare Orok airstrip is approximately 25 minute drive from the camp.
If you’re feeling adventurous we can arrange a private helicopter transfer which can land right at Mahali Mzuri.
