Walking Safari Tour

A walking safari is one of the most immersive and exciting ways to experience the African wilderness. Allowing you to connect with nature on an intimate, ground level scale. Using all your senses.

Generally, these are mild walks so suitable for most levels of fitness. Check with us beforehand so we can advise. Predominantly these are in game reserves so add to the thrill. You focus on the smaller details of the ecosystem.

Tracking, identifying spoor (animal tracks). Learning about flora and insects. And smelling the unique scents of the bush. You are always accompanied by expert, armed, and qualified guides and often a park ranger. They are highly trained in animal behavior to ensure your safety.

Highlights

Zambia

South Luangwa National Park, North Luangwa, Lower Zambezi Zambia is known for the most authentic and highest standards of guiding. Offers mobile walking safaris where you walk from camp to camp.

Tanzania

Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (Selous), Tarangire, Serengeti Ruaha is highly recommended for its remote feel and low visitor numbers. The Serengeti offers multi-day trekking in certain areas with an armed guide and ranger.

South Africa

The Greater Kruger National Park*, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Eastern Cape Game Reserves Great for viewing the Big Five and offers a variety of experiences. From short trails to multi-day “wilderness trails” where you sleep under the stars.

Botswana

Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans A unique experience combining walking with mokoro (dugout canoe) trips through the Delta waterways.

Zimbabwe

Mana Pools National Park, Hwange National Park Mana Pools is world famous for its incredible visibility due to sparse vegetation. Allowing for legendary walking experiences.

Kenya

Private Conservancies (e.g., Laikipia, Mara Naboisho) Walking is often restricted in national parks but is becoming popular in private conservancies. Often combined with cultural experiences led by local Maasai or Samburu guides.

*Includes private reserves like Sabi Sands, Timbavati.

The adventure of a walking safari tour is the best. They range from short, guided bush walks (a few hours from a lodge). To multi day mobile safaris where you walk between camps. Or temporary, fly-camps that are set up for you each day.

We are focusing on multi day walking safaris here.

You might encounter large game like elephants, buffalo, or even the Big Five. However, the focus is more on a getting a deeper, interpretive experience.

Essential Tips for Your Walking Safari

The most important safety rule is always listen to your guide’s directions. Without hesitation. Walk in single file and keep talk to a minimum or a low whisper. And never run.

Wear neutral or natural colors (khaki, olive green, brown) to blend into the environment. Avoid any bright colors, black, or white. Plus, bring comfortable, sturdy, and broken-in closed walking shoes or hiking boots. Gaitors (protective covers for your shoes) come in handy too so you don’t get scratched from brush.
