During South Africa’s summer season, Shamwari Private Game Reserve extends its offering to include the Shamwari Walking Safari at Explorer Camp. This unique walking experience is ideal for guests looking for an adventurous and authentic safari option.
The Shamwari Walking Safari is at Explorer Camp. The itinerary comprises a min 2-night trail. It is operational on either a Tuesday & Wednesday or a Friday & Saturday. An optional 3rd night (Sunday) is on request. The camp operates from October to May.
The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide. Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours. A game-viewing vehicle remains in camp. The trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve. Guests will enjoy walks through the magnificent Shamwari. Whereby their guide will enhance their experience with birding, cultural history, and other natural histories of the area. Along with ample opportunity for some Big 5 encounters.
We regret that no persons younger than 16 years are able to participate. Participants older than 65 years will be required to provide a medical clearance certificate in order to participate.
Shamwari Walking Safari Itinerary
The below is an indication of a typical Shamwari Walking Safari. It is a guideline as all timings are subject to discussion upon arrival
Day 1 – day of arrival (Tuesday or Friday)
All guests arrive at the Welcome Lounge by midday
Meet your specialist guide who will transfer you in an open vehicle to the campsite
Camp orientation and lunch
Afternoon walk
Sundowner snacks and drinks are enjoyed upon return to the camp
Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire
Day 2 (Wednesday or Saturday)
An early start due to the nature of walking and temperatures during the summer
Morning walk commences and can last up to 4 hours
Enjoy a hearty brunch upon return to camp
Relax in your hammock or by the plunge pool. Catch up on some rest or simply adore nature
Afternoon walk
Enjoy sundowner snacks and drinks in the bush
Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire
Day 3 – day of departure (Thursday or Sunday)
Early rising due to the temperatures during the summer
Enjoy breakfast in the bush before departing at 10 am
A brief walk on the morning of departure is optional
Shamwari Walking Safari Accommodation
The camp is located on a plateau set among the only basalt and granite extrusions on Shamwari in the Eastern Cape. Offering the ambiance of a tented bush camp of old safari lore. It offers magnificent views of the reserve from the viewing deck. A truly magical setting awaits.
This explorer camp reflects the original safari of being on foot and sleeping around the fire at night. However, within the comfort of a bush tent. There are 3 x ensuite tents sleeping up to 6 people. Each tent has duvets and pillows, a cupboard, and LED lights. Guest amenities include insect repellent, toilet paper, towels, tissues, sanitary bags as well as shower gel and shampoo.
The campsite provides a true explorer ambiance. For safety reasons, the camp is discreetly fenced. The tents are placed in close proximity without encroaching on the other tents’ privacy.
Culinary feasts are presented around the campfire or in the dining tent with exquisite silverware.
Shamwari Walking Safari Rates
1st October 2023 – 31st May 2024: R7 300 per person sharing or R9 490 single per night.
Rates include accommodation, meals, selected local beverages, walking activities, tourism levy, and 15% VAT.
Rates exclude French Champagne and premium branded beverages, transfers, laundry, gift boutique purchases, spa treatment, and conservation levy.
