Hwange Honeymoon
A honeymoon in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, isn’t just a vacation. It’s an immersive escape into one of Africa’s premier wildlife sanctuaries. Known worldwide for its massive elephant herds (over 45,000 strong!) and vibrant predator populations, Hwange offers an intimate, crowd free alternative to busier safari destinations.
Experience the magic of “underground hides” where you can sit safely at water level while magnificent elephant herds drink just feet away.
When is the best time to go on Hwange Honeymoon?
Because Hwange experiences dramatic seasonal shifts, the park transforms completely between the dry winter and the wet summer.
June to August if you want perfect, mild weather and easy, abundant wildlife viewing.
September or October if you want maximum wildlife drama and don’t mind the heat.
November to December if you want lush, green backdrops, cute newborn animals, great pricing, and exclusive privacy.
Here’s the seasons in more detail:
June to August
If your priority is excellent safaris combined with great weather, this is the absolute best time for a Hwange safari.
The bush thins out and natural surface water dries up. Animals become entirely reliant on the park’s pumped waterholes. You can sit on a lodge deck or in an underground hide and watch the wildlife gather at them.
Days are beautiful, crisp, and clear (around 25°C / 77°F) with zero rain and a very low malaria risk.
Nights and early morning game drives are freezing (sometimes dropping to 6°C / 43°F). You will want to dress warmly (in layers). Returning to camp to sit by a roaring fire with a glass of red wine is incredibly romantic.
September to October
This is the peak of the dry season, often called the “Suicide Months” by locals. The heat is intense, but it offers the most spectacular wildlife sightings in the country.
Because water is incredibly scarce, the drama at the waterholes escalates. Massive buffalo herds, endless elephants, and predators (lions, leopards, and wild dogs) waiting in ambush.
It gets very hot, with daytime temperatures frequently soaring past 33°C (91°F) and easily hitting 40°C (104°F) in October.
If you book during these months, a luxury lodge with a private plunge pool and air conditioning is a huge plus. Or at least a pool at the camp so you can stay cool during the heat of the day.
November to March
Summer is arguably the most scenic and intimate time for a honeymoon if you don’t mind a bit of rain.
The first rains arrive in November, settling the dust and turning the parched brown plains into a lush, vibrant green paradise. This is also the calving season, meaning the bush is filled with newborn animals. Which in turn brings out plenty of predator action. Migratory birds arrive in their thousands.
It is hot and humid with regular afternoon thunderstorms. These storms are usually short, dramatic, and highly photogenic, clearing up quickly to leave bright blue skies.
As it is the low season, there are fewer tourists, ultimate privacy, and excellent seasonal pricing at the lodges. The thicker vegetation makes wildlife harder to spot than in the dry winter. Keep in mind that some lodges close between January and March when the rains peak.
April to May
In April the heavy summer rains tail off, leaving behind exceptionally clear, bright blue skies and crisp, dust-free air. Daytime temperatures hover comfortably in the high 20s°C (around 80°F). It’s warm but no longer humid.
By May, the dry season settles in completely, bringing clear skies and cooler temperatures.
In April and May, the park is still beautifully lush, vibrant, and green from the summer rains. The natural pans and waterholes are full, acting like pristine mirrors reflecting dramatic African sunsets. If you or your partner love photography, the contrast of golden sunlight against emerald green mopane woodlands and open plains is unmatched.
April and May see very low tourist volumes. April still bursts with migratory birds in full breeding plumage and newborn antelope calves. Which in turn keeps the apex predators, lions, leopards, and Hwange’s famous wild dog packs, highly active and on the hunt.
Hwange Honeymoon Accommodation
Think candlelit dinners under the stars, private plunge pools overlooking the savanna, and falling asleep to the distant roar of lions.
Because Hwange is located just a couple of hours south of Victoria Falls, most honeymoon couples combine these two unique destinations. Spending 3 nights marveling at the Smoke that Thunders (Victoria Falls) before heading into Hwange for a 4 night safari.
These are lodges in Hwange that have honeymoon offers. We still have many other lodges that have honeymoon offers even if not listed here (usually this is because they don’t have a honeymoon offer). Just send us an email by clicking ‘Get Quote Now’ and we can quote on any other lodges.
