Verney’s Camp Activities
From game drives to untamed walking safaris under the care of our highly trained guides, there is always something to see and do. Experience our unique water-based activities depending on the season, and the water levels during your visit.
Game Drives
Game viewing is at its best around dawn and dusk. On a typical day, the first game vehicle leaves camp before the sun is up. And the second drive heads out into the wilds in the late afternoon. Use the downtime in between drives to relax in the pool, or have a nap before heading out again. The blazing orange and red beauty of an African sunrise or sunset is something one never forgets.
No two drives are ever the same. Each outing is ripe with potential. Sometimes it will be a pack of African wild dogs trotting on the hunt and at others, it may be a lioness drinking at a waterhole with her cubs. It’s nature’s version of the lotto.
Bird watching
Bird lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to bird watching in southern Africa. The region’s wealth of varied habitats, including watering holes, forests, flood plains, mud pans and wetlands, attract a vast range resident and migratory species. The summer months (November to March) are best to see the African skies heavy with flocks of returning migratory birds. Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe boasts good infrastructure and boasts 420 species on file.
Guided Walks
Embark on a Guided Walk with your Ranger, as you learn about wildlife, fauna and flora in the area. Nothing heightens the senses like walking through the African bushveld amongst nature’s untamed creatures. Every sound is amplified, every movement is magnified and the sheer size of large animals is put into perspective when on foot. A walking safari provides an opportunity to experience the finer details of life in the bush. Both big and small.
Cultural Experience
After an early breakfast at 7am, guests depart on a slow game drive north east towards Hwange Main Camp. This takes around 2 hours. Guests will visit The National Parks Primary School that Verney’s Camp have adopted and sponsor along with other operators in Hwange National Park. After the visit, guest travel to Mabale Village to visit an authentic rural village typical to the area. Here you will meet the local people from the district.
Then head to the Painted Dog Research Center to learn more about the endangered African Wild Dog. Guests also get a chance to meet the researches and get involved in future sponsorship of this critical study. Then it’s back to Verney’s Camp after a scrumptous picnic lunch at one of the numerous waterholes on the way.
The best days to do this are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. During school holidays and weekends the school is closed however the trip still operates to the other two venues.
