Wining and Dining
Singita offers the ultimate culinary safari. Their motto is providing healthier dishes with a variety of flavors, using local produce. About 80% of their fresh produce is provided by the local co-op, GHOMACOS. Using what is available to you in remote locations can sometimes be a challenge. However this really pushes the chefs to be creative, flexible and learn to work with what they have.
A new kind of culinary safari experience, the interactive kitchen brings guests closer to the food journey. Guests love being able to watch and interact with the chefs and students.
The Serengeti School of Cooking promises to give students the best education in the art of food (and wine). Graduates from the Serengeti School of Cooking gain a nationally recognized Professional Cookery qualification. After which they can commence work as a Commis Chef level within a Singita lodge kitchen. Or any other lodge or hotel within Tanzania. This positively impacts the lives of the communities within the Serengeti and surrounding districts.
Singita’s experienced sommeliers are happy to guide guests through a personalized wine tasting experience. Showcasing a variety of wine styles, vintages and cultivars. Orders can be placed for shipping selected wines back home.
Best time to visit the Serengeti
East Africa is equatorial so the climate is fairly constant. Therefore, it is a year round destination. Tanzania has a light rain season from November to March. This period is known as the ‘short rains’. Often no more than a quick downpour each day, followed by clear sunshine. From December to March the weather becomes increasingly warmer with the ‘long rains’ occurring between April and May.
To ensure your comfort you may want to tailor your clothing choices to the time of year:
October – April:
Casual summer clothing (shorts and lightweight shirts). With a warm jersey or sweater for the cooler morning and evening temperatures.
May – September:
Casual lightweight clothing with a very warm parka or windbreaker jacket for the very cold mornings and nights.
When Is the Peak Time to See the Wildebeest Migration?
The wildebeest migration is the biggest draw card to East Africa. This natural phenomenon occurs annually between Tanzania and Kenya. They migrate throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing. The wildebeest are accompanied by large numbers of zebra and smaller numbers of Thomson’s gazelle, eland and impala. Naturally attracting the predators who follow their path.
The only beginning is when calves are born around the Southern Serengeti plains. Almost 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a 6-week period. This is usually between late January and mid-March. The migration path varies from year to year and they can go in different directions. With a group moving through the more central Serengeti and another via Grumeti Game Reserve etc. It all depends on weather and other environmental factors. This makes it difficult to predict exactly where the migrating wildebeest will be in a given month.
See our more detailed explanation on the Wildebeest Migration.
Usually, they can be in the Grumeti area around May/June – July crossing over the Grumeti River. They then move northward towards Kenya. This is the time to stay at sister lodge, Singita Mara River Tented Camp in Lamai. The migration crosses the Mara River several times so they are usually around here for August and September. Returning again for the southwards journey in November / December. Singita Mara River Tented Camp will definitely see the mega herds. Some may return to Singita Grumeti as they make their way south too.
