Kitirua Plains Lodge (Amboseli)

Kitirua Plains Lodge

Kitirua Plains Lodge is in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, on a 128 acre private concession bordering Amboseli National Park. This brand new A&K Sanctuary lodge opened in June 2026. Architecturally striking and resolutely Eco-friendly, it delivers elegant, understated luxury guaranteed to steal your heart. Shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it. Low, curving forms follow the lie of the hills; tones borrow from the soil itself. With locally made furniture using materials including mango wood and African teak. Offering year round appeal, and close air links to Nairobi and the Tanzanian border.

The dedicated and highly knowledgeable team of A&K Sanctuary staff, Kitirua Plains Lodge offers guests an experience like no other. Alongside the park’s famous herds of elephants, as well as big cats, giraffes, hippos and more than 400 bird species.

Kitirua Plains Lodge offers wellness spaces crafted for guest comfort, whilst open fronted dining and lounge areas invite guests to savor the landscape at every turn. With single and double treatment rooms, pedicure stations, and relaxation beds that overlook the plains. A gym and open air yoga deck, located just beyond, invite guests to practice in harmony with nature. The large swimming pool is flanked by an earth toned terrace of day beds and sits neatly within a patch of existing wetland.

Kitirua Plains Lodge Accommodation

The lodge’s standalone suites showcase a contemporary architectural vision. Across the 13 suites, 11 face Kilimanjaro and the first light of dawn. While the pair of two bedroom suites gaze onto sweeping grasslands. All with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views from the bed. Allowing guests to watch wildlife roam freely across the plains from the comfort of their private deck. Zebras and wildebeest graze, vervet monkeys scamper across the plains, elephants occasionally wander into view, and guests may even spot the resident hippo who has made the watering hole his very own.

Each is designed to provide privacy between suites. Accentuating the sense of peace and calm.

The suites (116 sq m / 1248 sq ft) sit on the hillside for panoramic views of the ever changing plains. Each neutral toned suite has a striking contemporary design incorporating soft linens, jute, wood, wicker, stone and traditional Maasai-inspired elements such as timber screens. About Amboseli National Park

This is elephant country. Amboseli is famed for its great tuskers (including some that guests will come to know by name as they wander past the lodge) and the fifty herds that roam freely across the park. Amboseli is a land in flux, transformed each season by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. In the dry months, the plains become pale and shimmering. With the rains, the ancient lake bed floods to form temporary wetlands alive with birdlife. These cyclical waters sustain the park’s famous elephant herds, in herds of up to 100 animals, ranging in size from playful babies to gentle senior matriarchs. Plus resident prides of lions and cheetahs. Stealthy leopards are more elusive.

Other carnivores that call the park home include spotted hyenas (which can sometimes be observed in multi-generational gatherings in their dens), jackals and civets. Giraffes, buffaloes, impalas, wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and baboons are among the other likely game drive sightings. Plus abundant bird life.

The national park also harbors striped hyenas (which are less dominant than their spotted counterparts), and lesser kudus are now endangered animal species.

Each guest has Leica binoculars to use for the duration of their stay.

Kitirua Plains Lodge Activities

Guests at Kitirua Plains Lodge can join daily game drives into Amboseli’s diverse habitats with the expert guides. Where elephants, lions and cheetahs are frequent sightings, and birdlife abounds. For deeper connection to the land and people, cultural visits with the local Maasai community are woven into the experience. Optional hot-air balloon flights further enrich a safari stay at the lodge, at an additional cost.

Because Kitirua Plains Lodge sits on its own private concession of 32,000 acres, guests are fully immersed in nature here. Away from the crowds, for a truly exclusive experience. As the day unfolds, Mount Kilimanjaro retreats behind the clouds; revealing itself at different points throughout the day. Attention shifts to the open plains, which guests can explore during their game drives. Amidst the most photogenic of backgrounds. Giraffes browse the acacia canopies, cheetahs prowl the golden grasslands, and elephant herds drift silently across the horizon.

Birding

The concentration of resident and migratory birdlife is among the greatest in East Africa. Spot pelicans, kingfishers, and great blushing masses of flamingo’s gathering around Lake Amboseli among its 400 strong bird species. While waterbirds are most common in the swamps and marshes, the presence of other species such as raptors is often a clue to a fresh kill. For example opportunistic tawny eagles circling in the skies. From the tail-feather ruffles of leggy ostriches to the colorful plumage of the little bee-eater, keep your binoculars primed to spot the smallest and largest of Amboseli’s abundant birds. The national park also harbors a number of endangered bird species: Malagasy pond herons, taita falcons and secretary birds.
