The River Club (Livingstone)

The River Club

The River Club is a boutique, kosher-friendly; owner-run luxury lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River; just outside Livingstone and Victoria Falls; which is the largest body of falling water; so it is a magnificent sight to see. It is the ultimate destination for that perfect mix of idyllic relaxation and adventure travel; along with unbeatable sights.

Soaked in ambiance and history, the restored 1940s homestead has a comfortable lounge, dining room, library, and veranda; where guests enjoy breakfasts and teas.

Only 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the town of Livingstone in Zambia and the mighty Victoria Falls, a World Heritage Site and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. A highlight of any safari to Africa is seeing the magical Victoria Falls; also called Mosi-oa-Tunya; meaning the smoke that thunders. Escape the crowds in Livingstone with this tranquil location, with spacious suites and a magnificent perspective of the Zambezi River.

Victoria Falls is about twice the height of Niagara Falls and well over twice the width of its Horseshoe Falls. The Falls form the border between Zimbabwe (the town called Victoria Falls) and Zambia (the town called Livingstone). The River Club forms a perfect end to a safari circuit in Southern or East Africa. It is an idyllic retreat for families or honeymooners.

The main lodge is surrounded by serene gardens; beneath the indigenous riverine forest. Wander the pathways listening to a chorus of birdsong or relax on the main terrace; overlooking the water or in the privacy of the balcony in front of your suite. There are no early wake-up calls unless you request them.

A host of activities await young and old, on the property as well as in the nearby area.

Kosher-friendly Accommodation at Victoria Falls

For those seeking to visit the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, while remaining observant; The River Club’s Kosher ‘Lite’ and Dedicated Kosher kitchen options offer a variety of mouth-watering menus; you won’t find ‘chazerei’ here.

The history of Zambia’s small Jewish community is a personal passion for Peter Jones, an owner of The River Club. His enthusiasm for the subject has led him on a journey from the past to the present. Peter decided The River Club would offer an opportunity for those seeking to visit the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls; while remaining observant.

Kosher Culinary Options

There are 2 kitchens; both of which are laid out according to kosher rules. All cutlery, crockery, utensils, equipment, etc are stored permanently in these kitchens and used only for Kosher catering. All food and ingredients are strictly kosher.

The lodge especially imports beef and lamb. Delicious fresh whole skin-on Zambezi Bream comes from a fish farm nearby. Sadly, kosher chicken is not available in Zambia. Fresh vegetables and fruit are seasonal and in plentiful local supply. All dairy products are kosher, and purchased locally, so some items are subject to availability.

Kosher Kitchen 1 is an affordable option; aimed at groups as small as 1 person up to 10 at an additional supplement. It serves excellent Kosher cuisine prepared by lodge staff who are trained in Kosher catering.

If you wish for your Kosher food to be overseen by a Mashgiach; then Kosher Kitchen 2 is for you; however; with a higher supplement and subject to a minimum of a 3-night stay and 4 guests. It is sealed after use and no one is allowed in during the interim. Expenses are higher due to hiring, accommodation, travel, and transfer expenses of the Mashgiach; which are usually shared between members of larger groups. From 4-nights, the supplement is much lower so with good planning; it is a better option.

The River Club Activities

There is a variety of on-site facilities available for all guests to enjoy; chill at the infinity main area swimming pool with forever-views over the river; play croquet or boulés on the lawn; board games in the library such as chess or backgammon or just read a book; make use of the tennis court, the gym, the nature / running trail, and the Summerhouse; or play snooker in the Snooker / TV room. The TV is seldom utilized as there is so much to do at The River Club!

Other on-site activities include; evening sunset cruises, catch-and-release tiger fishing, Island Picnic Lunches on the island in front of the lodge; in low water season; or book a massage or other treatment. You can even send the children off for a KIDS @ THE CLUB guided walk.
