The Sabi Sand Game Reserve shares a 50 km (31.25 miles) unfenced border with the Kruger National Park. It is, therefore; able to offer some of THE BEST South African safaris. In the oldest private game reserve in South Africa.
Also historically known as Sabi Sand Wildtuin, it has recently been renamed Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. The reserve does not allow day visitors or people to drive around unless you are staying at one of the lodges. Therefore the park remains exclusive. Another significant benefit is your game ranger is permitted to drive off-road. Something that is strictly prohibited in the Kruger National Park.
The Sand River flows through the reserve for 50km (31 miles). From northwest to the southeast. While the Sabie River flows on the southern boundary. Because of these rivers; this area enjoys one of the highest and most bio-diverse wildlife populations of any area in Africa. Wildlife viewing is second to none. Making this one of the best South African safari destinations.
The Sabi Sand Reserve enjoys good quality viewing of leopard (the most elusive of predators). As well as elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra. And a vast variety of antelope and other species (over two hundred). While the ever changing bird life provides even the most experienced ornithologist (birding specialist); with rare finds.
Getting to Sabi Sand Game Reserve
The reserve is easily accessible with 3 gates and several airstrips. There are also 3 airports nearby. Hoedspruit is best for northern Sabi lodges. Skukuza is best for southern Sabi lodges. And Nelspruit which can be used for both southern and northern lodges. Albeit with a longer transfer time. We will then arrange a road transfer to your lodge. From Skukuza and Nelspruit you can also take the lodge-hop light aircraft flight.
It is also easy to access for self-drive guests (where you hire a vehicle to drive around South Africa). It is important that you know which gate to use. The gates are Shaws, Newington, and Gowrie Gates. To drive from Johannesburg is between a 5 ½ – 7-hour drive. Many self-drive clients choose to explore the amazing Panorama Route pre or post their safari in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. We will happily arrange all of this for you.
