Eastern Cape Honeymoon
The Eastern Cape is an absolute gem for a honeymoon because it gives you completely different worlds to choose from. It is South Africa’s most diverse province. Transitioning from rugged, dramatic coastlines to malaria-free “Big Five” safaris and misty mountains.
For safaris, Shamwari is the largest with 7 lodges to choose from. Addo is also in the Eastern Cape, plus many other lodges on the outskirts.
With its scenic mountains and beaches, the Eastern Cape offers tons of romantic safaris and honeymoon getaways in wilderness areas. Whether at the beach, in forests, and in the countryside. The coastline is 800 km (497 miles), stretching from the Tsitsikamma to the subtropical Wild Coast.
When is the best time for an Eastern Cape honeymoon?
Because the Eastern Cape blends beach, bush, and mountains, the “best” time depends entirely on whether you want to prioritize premier wildlife viewing or warm beach days.
December to March (Summer)
Summer is best if your dream honeymoon involves swimming in the Indian Ocean, sunbathing on the beaches, and long, balmy evenings. The days are hot, and the vibe is classic summer holiday energy. The ocean temperature is at its warmest. While the coastal forests and bush are incredibly lush, green, and beautiful.
This is the rainy season for the interior, meaning you can expect occasional, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that cool things down. January and February are the hottest months (frequently reaching 30°C).
Mid-December to early January is peak local school holiday season, so beaches and family resorts will be busy. You will need to book well in advance.
April to May (Autumn)
Autumn is a great time to travel to South Africa as the weather settles to warm and clear days with less wind. And the peak summertime crowds have disappeared. This makes it fantastic for hiking (Tsitsikamma is a highlight) or taking long walks on the secluded beaches.
June to August (Winter)
Winter is a great time for an Eastern Cape safari. The bush thins out (due to no rain), and animals congregate around permanent waterholes. With crisp, clear blue skies and dry, and golden landscapes. Daytime temperatures are lovely and mild (around 20°C), but mornings and nights get bitterly cold. Sometimes dropping close to freezing. You will need heavy jackets and beanies for those early morning game drives! You are almost guaranteed spectacular wildlife sightings. Lodges are also generally quieter and cozier, with roaring fireplaces.
September to October (Spring)
If you want to combine a safari with a coastal getaway, spring is arguably the best all-around time to visit. The weather transitions into beautifully mild, warm days, but the intense summer heat hasn’t hit yet. Daytime highs hover around 17°C to 24°C, though mornings and evenings remain crisp.
September is prime calving season on the game reserves, so you will see plenty of newborn animals. It also overlaps with the tail-end of the whale-watching season along the coast.
