Garden Route Honeymoon
From the forests to the beaches, the Garden Route will not disappoint any honeymooners. Stretching along South Africa’s southern coast from Mossel Bay to the Storms River. The Garden Route is a premier self-drive destination. Pick up a car either in Cape Town or Port Elizabeth and decide where you want to drive to. Seamlessly transition from pristine beaches and ancient indigenous forests to mist-shrouded lagoons and private game reserves.
Enjoy romantic sailing trips and sunset cruises, forest hikes, canoe trips with picnics, and couples massages. For the adventurous, the fun never ends with zip lining, tubing, canyoning, bungee jumping, quad biking, and more!
Top Garden Route honeymoon destinations
Wilderness is ideal for couples seeking secluded serenity. Think long, hand-in-hand strolls on endless stretches of unspoiled beach, canoeing up calm rivers, and private timber cabins tucked away in the forest canopy.
Knysna is the ultimate romantic hub. You can spend your afternoons sampling fresh, world renowned oysters, enjoying a sunset champagne cruise across the tranquil lagoon, or staying in an intimate cliffside lodge overlooking the dramatic Knysna Heads.
Plettenberg Bay is a sophisticated mix of luxury and leisure. Plett offers pristine Blue Flag beaches, exceptional boutique wine estates, and the rugged beauty of the Robberg Nature Reserve where you can hike and spot seals basking below the cliffs.
Tsitsikamma falls on the border of the Garden Route and the Eastern Cape. It is ideal for the adventurous pairs. If sharing an adrenaline rush strengthens your bond, you can walk across the suspension bridge over the churning Storms River Mouth, go blackwater tubing, or glide through the ancient treetops on a canopy tour.
A popular trend for a Garden Route honeymoon is a “Bush & Beach” combo. Start with a couple of nights at a luxury, malaria-free private game reserve nearby (like Gondwana or a lodge in the adjacent Eastern Cape) for big game viewing, before hitting the coastal road for ocean sunsets and forest walks.
When is the best time for a Garden Route Honeymoon?
While the Garden Route is technically a year round destination with a mild, temperate climate, timing a honeymoon is all about balancing great weather with privacy.
Our personal choice would be February to April (Late Summer/Autumn) as the Garden Route is not as busy as the peak summer and temperatures are still great.
