In the Masai Mara, two very different and complementary experiences offer something for everyone. Angama Mara, high up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara Triangle below. And Angama Safari Camp. The exclusive-use tented camp is in the heart of the reserve. And surrounded by the mega herds during the Great Migration.
At both camps, you can expect a warm Kenyan welcome from a team of consummate and characterful professionals. With well considered guest experiences, contemporary African design with surprising and delightful details throughout. And just enough spontaneity and humor to ensure that no one forgets to have fun.
Angama Mara has views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Across the Masai Mara in Kenya, set some 300 meters below. The interiors of Angama Mara’s guest areas are wrapped on all four sides by glass stacking doors. This offers guests an indoor/outdoor experience. With expansive decks, there is no defined sitting room, dining room, or bar. Just a charming mix of everything.
Many of the loveliest scenes from the legendary movie Out of Africa with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep were filmed on the site of Angama Mara. Therefore, Angama Mara will be extra special for you.
Angama Mara Main Camp Accommodation
The lodge is divided into two adjacent camps of just 15 x tented suites each, North and South Camp. The tents are all identical, each with wonderful views of the Mara below. Each camp has its own Guest Area and a team of hospitality staff. Between the two camps, and within easy walking distance of all the tents, is the Pavilion. Here, guests may enjoy the use of the Swimming Pool, the Fitness Room, the Safari Shop, the Maasai Beading Studio, and the Photographic Studio.
Each tented suite and guest area hangs on the edge of the Rift Valley. The spacious 100m² suites have floor-to-ceiling glass spanning all along the front to make the most of the dramatic views. They all have spacious decks. Where you can enjoy private dinners, and massage treatments and watch the wildlife in the Masai Mara. Wake up to hot air balloons sailing past the 11m wide floor-to-ceiling glass fronts of your tented suite.
The interiors are uncluttered, classic and above all, comfortable with splashes of Maasai Red, French Khaki, copper, and brass.
Angama Safari Camp Accommodation
Angama Safari Camp is an intimate light footprint movable camp in the Masai Mara. Surrounded by astounding year round wildlife. It is in the heart of the mega herds during the months of the annual Migration. Currently, the camp has 3 sites on private campsites deep in the remote wilderness areas of the Mara. With easy access to Angama Mara Camp, it offers guests the best of both. Enjoy days poolside at the lodge, with access to all the facilities at Angama Mara. Returning back to Safari Camp to enjoy starlit nights with only the wildlife to keep you company.
It has 4 x en suite tents of 32m2 each that accommodate up to eight guests. In the words of Nicky Fitzgerald, CEO of Angama: “Our purpose is to provide an impeccable safari experience that distills the sophistication of simplicity right down to its very essence. Stare at the fire, listen to the birds, read, take a nap, relax in the red rocker, watch the sunset, cook over the coals; breathe the fresh air, try and count the stars, and share many stories. Our wish is for our guests to experience an overwhelming sense of ‘this is all mine’.”
There is a fresh, uncluttered approach to the camp’s design. Maximizing the light and views thanks to the tents’ landscape orientation. Interiors echo the fresh approach to the design of Angama Mara with the best of everything. But always just the right amount of everything. As the camps are mobile, there is no air conditioning. There are fans in the tents and in order to maximize cross ventilation, they have a four-layer tented roof system.

Children’s activities on safari in Kenya
Going on safari with your children is one of the most transformative travel experiences shared as a family. What could be more rewarding than discovering Africa’s animals? Great and small. Birds too numerous to count, and rich diversity of cultures. At Angama Mara, their approach is to keep young guests busy. Tailor making their adventures throughout their stay. Which over and above going out on safari, include: Put on a special Angama apron and join Angama’s baker in the kitchen. Getting stuck into the serious business of measuring, pouring, and mixing. And of course, taste testing the final result. Explore the escarpment with a Maasai warrior. Learning about their culture while discovering interesting plants, trees, and herbs. Under the guidance of an expert Maasai warrior, master the special skills that have enabled them to live amongst Africa’s wild animals. Learn the basics of photography at the Angama Photographic Studio on your own mobile phone, point-and-shoot, or manual camera. Join the Maasai Mamas at their worktable where they will teach you the delicate art of beading. The Shamba is so much more than an ordinary vegetable patch. Join the shamba keepers as they harvest fresh and healthy fruit, vegetables, and herbs, tasting them along the way.
Best time to visit the Masai Mara
The Maasai Mara is great to visit all year round and there is always an abundance of wildlife. July through to September or October are the best months to visit for guests who would like to witness the Wildebeest Migration. And the dramatic river crossing. Others prefer to go outside these months so there aren’t as many people around. There are numerous resident herds that quite rightly do not deem it necessary to leave this beautiful reserve by embarking on the annual trek to Tanzania.
The Maasai Mara is especially renowned for its prides of lions (including the Angama Pride, just below the lodge). The other members of Africa’s Big Five are also regularly sighted, together with hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the bat-eared fox. Of course, the Mara River is home to numerous pods of hippos and some of Africa’s largest crocodiles. Great photographic opportunities present themselves with topi standing perched on anthills. Or Masai giraffe moving gracefully across the plains. Both Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelles graze peacefully amongst Coke’s hartebeest, impala, and herds of lovely eland, the continent’s largest antelope.
The Mara Triangle is also home to more than 470 bird species. Including almost 60 raptors such as vultures and martial eagles. Surely the loveliest of them all has to be the graceful crowned crane. These are always found in pairs, together with secretary birds, lilac-breasted rollers, long-crested eagles, superb starlings, pygmy falcons, and endangered ground hornbills to name just a few.
Angama Mara’s experienced guides make every effort to deliver life changing wildlife adventures for their guests. Be it for first timers, birding enthusiasts, or photographers of all skill levels. Or safari devotees whose great joy is just to simply be amongst Africa’s creatures, both great and small.
Out of Africa Movie
When the location scouts for the movie Out of Africa came searching for a site that was similar to Ngong Hills, they found the perfect site here. Some of the loveliest scenes were filmed just a few minutes’ walk from the lodge. In celebration of this, there are subtle touches in and around the lodge.
Guests at Angama Mara lodge are surprised by a private picnic for two on the crest of the Out of Africa kopje. Wicker basket, a checked blanket, and a Stanley flask. This is only available to guests staying at Angama. For those guests who love the movie or are hopeless romantics, this is surely the highlight of any stay. On the way back to the lodge, stop in to pay your respects.
Out of Africa Movie Touches ↓
In Every Guest Tent
A lovely edition of Out of Africa A copy of Peter Beard’s book Longing for Darkness. This is a collection of Kamante’s Tales about his search for Blixen’s staff she left in Kenya. And missed so terribly all the years of her life back in Denmark A screen that harks back to that scene in the film where she uses the screen in her home as inspiration to begin her storytelling to Finch Hatton and Cole
In the guest areas
A pair of plantation chairs that is exactly like the ones used on the set. Meryl Streep sits on this handsome wooden and wicker lounger made by Nairobi’s acclaimed furniture designer Marc van Rampelberg
In the library a little yellow bi-plane similar to the one flown by Denys Finch Hatton
And a single red rose in memory of Karen Blixen. She was presented with one by a literary admirer every day towards the end of her life. It is the only flower in the lodge
On the property
But it is around the property that guests feel the deep romance of this love story of Blixen and Finch Hatton. The movie’s iconic poster was shot on the saddle between the hill on which one of the camps is built. This is now called the Out of Africa kopje by the lodge. Guests sit on the very spot where the Streep and Redford picnicked with the Mara spread out below. These kopjes at Angama Mara have all the loveliness and romance of the Ngong Hills. But without any of the urban impact.
And lastly, all the scenes depicting Finch Hatton’s burial and where the lions come to visit his grave a year later were all filmed near the lodge. A plaque marking the spot where Meryl Streep delivers that heart-wrenching eulogy in the movie is under a beautiful moth tree on the property.
Angama Location & Access:
Daily scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Angama Mara or the closest airstrip to Angama Safari Camp’s location. The flights are about 45 minutes, depending on the routing. Angama Mara airstrip is only a 5-minute drive from camp. Getting to Safari Camp is on average about a 60-minute safari, depending on game viewing en route There is excellent air access from Nairobi and the Serengeti (via Migori in Kenya and Tarime in Tanzania) The camps are easily accessible by road from other camps in the Greater Maasai Mara
Angama Mara Activities ↓
Masai Mara Safaris
Angama Mara’s guides tailor-make their guest’s safari days. The guides are storytellers and interpret the Mara in a way that immerses their guests in the surroundings. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the knowledge and companionship of more than one guide as their desired safari experience changes from day to day. And the guiding team will endeavor to match like-minded guests with each other. Birders will go on safari with fellow birders. As will those with a keen interest in photography or another special interest.
Because the weather is so mild in the Mara, there are no constraints as to when to go on a game drive. Choose to go out early and be back at the lodge for breakfast. Out early with a picnic breakfast and back for lunch. Out after breakfast with a picnic lunch and back mid-afternoon. A post-lunch game drive and back at sunset. Or very best of all, spending a whole day exploring the Mara Triangle. With a picnic breakfast and lunch down at the Tanzanian border without a soul in sight. That’s an all-time favorite.
Descend down Angama Mara’s private road and 10 minutes later find yourselves in the heart of the action. Surrounded by more animals than you could imagine. The vast grasslands dotted with acacias are home to abundant herds. As well as Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.
The safari vehicles offer comfy seats, ample legroom, charging stations, and canvas roofs for respite from the sun. All game drives have a maximum of 6 x guests per vehicle. Other than families or groups where up to 9 x guests can be accommodated per vehicle. Should you prefer, private safari vehicles can be booked in advance.
Hot Air Balloon
Enjoy one of the iconic experiences of Africa, floating gently over the Maasai Mara in a hot air balloon.
Wake before dawn, with freshly brewed tea or coffee delivered right to your tent. And enjoy the fresh, early morning drive to one of the two launch sites within easy reach from the lodge. If you’re still waking up, enjoy another cup of coffee and watch as the balloon is slowly inflated. A quick and straightforward pre flight briefing, and before you know it, the balloon is airborne. And you’re floating effortlessly above the Mara.
The soft, early morning breeze takes the balloon southwards towards the Tanzanian border. With the typical flight path along the Mara River and its adjoining forest, and over the open plains beyond.
This is an unmatched safari. Even the lions look up in surprise as one sails on by. And all the animals of the Mara are visible from the air. A flight normally lasts around one hour and ends with a sometimes bumpy landing amidst the termite mounds. It is all part of the adventure. Once you’ve settled back to earth, toast the morning’s activities with a celebratory champagne breakfast. Specially prepared under a tree in the middle of nowhere.
Walking Safari
Many guests choose to discover the Great Rift Valley on foot. Leaving Angama Mara and heading South along the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, Maasai Naturalists offer guided walks through lovely forests and open areas in between. The birding up here, high above the Maasai Mara, is especially rewarding.
Guests learn the traditional ways of the Maasai people from the Naturalists. Local legends, fables, traditions, customs, the medicinal use of plants. And are often treated to singing and dancing along the way. All the while, lovely views of the Mara 300m below offer glimpses of great herds of buffalo. Or a solitary elephant melting into the forest.
Walking safaris at Angama Mara are tailor made for every guest. Every fitness level is taken into consideration. Depending on the time of day, and the length of the walk, they can include picnic baskets, blankets, or even a lift back to the lodge. From a gentle 2 hour stroll to a full day’s walk, guests can choose exactly how they would like to discover the Rift Valley on foot.
Photography At Angama Mara
There is something about being in the Mara Triangle that simply forces you to grab your camera and catch that fleeting moment of beauty. Be it a balloon floating gently by with the sunrise as a backdrop. The patterns that the clouds form on the great grasslands below. Or a giraffe peering curiously down at you through its long eyelashes. Taking great pictures in the Mara is easy and fun for photographers thanks to the open grasslands, the abundance of wildlife year round, and well trained guides who understand your photographic needs.
Angama Mara’s Photographic Studio is an exciting hub of imagery, content creation, teaching, and sharing. During private photographic tutorials with the on site wildlife photographer, you can learn how to come to grips with your camera. Gaining the confidence to shoot ‘off auto’. For those who would like to test out some new photographic equipment, the Studio has cameras, lenses, and specialist kits available for hire.
As most photographers know, much of the magic happens during the editing process when knowing exactly what to fix, straighten and adjust makes all the difference. With the assistance of Studio Hosts, learn how to bring the best out of your images on large screen Apple desktops, loaded with the latest editing software. You can even print a small portfolio of your own photographs on the Studio’s photographic printer. Of course, you can also hop online and share daily wildlife sightings with your online communities. Or even enter The Greatest Maasai Mara Photographer of the Year competition.
Please note that costs apply for printing and equipment hire.
Private Photographic Safaris and Photo Shoots
Photographers looking to improve their technical photographic skills and knowledge can spend time exploring the Mara with seasoned safari photographic guides. Angama Mara’s on site wildlife photographer and a selection of specialist guides can accompany you on private photographic safaris.
For those who prefer to put down their cameras and enjoy their Mara experience to the fullest, the in house photographer can capture these wonderful memories on your behalf. Options range from family photo shoots around the lodge to the photographer joining you on your game drive vehicle for half a day to capture the whole safari adventure, both people and wildlife.
*Please inquire when booking for rates and photographic guide availability.
Maasai Culture
In the heart of Maasailand, Angama Mara is surrounded by many traditional homestead manyattas that welcome travelers. Here, guests enjoy a rare opportunity of gaining a deeper understanding of the everyday lives of the Maasai, their ways, their fascinating culture, and what daily challenges they face in maintaining the fine balance between preserving their ancient ways and embracing the new.
Every evening at sunset, Maasai warriors perform in the lodge’s traditional brush packed boma, and here, guests are able to not only photograph this time honored celebration of song and dance but can also participate should they so wish. In Angama Mara’s craft studio, guests can try their hand at Maasai craft, as skilled ladies bead bespoke items onto pieces of clothing. Angama Mara has also had the privilege of hosting Maasai weddings, vow renewals, the Olympics, and even a Maasai Mitzvah.
Relaxing at Angama Mara
For those wanting to take things a little easier, a masseuse offers full body massages on the tent’s deck. Or indulge in a rocking chair safari. Each tent has two comfy bright red rocking chairs, from which you can enjoy the parade of wildlife in the Mara spread out below. All the tents are equipped with binoculars and there is a spotting scope in the guest area. There are heaps of resident game around the lodge. And watching the raptors soar effortlessly above and below you is a great way to while away the hours.
In the guest areas, there is a lovely stand alone library. Both the tented suites and the library, are covered by a high speed WiFi network.
Angama Mara has a beautiful swimming pool (12m x 6m) with rim-flow views of the Mara below and beyond. The pool was designed with families and sun lovers in mind and is court yarded on three sides. Alongside the pool is the lodge’s Fitness Room, once again with floor to ceiling glass stacking doors to enjoy the view. Guests can choose from elliptical, treadmills and bicycles, yoga, Pilates balls, and a ballet bar for stretching.
Angama Mara’s Safari Shop offers guests the opportunity to browse through a curated selection of Kenyan and African jewelry, fashion, artifacts, and literature. Leading off from the shop is a Maasai craft studio, where guests can try their hand at beading or even perhaps have Maasai ladies bead a bespoke item onto their clothing. This is the perfect place for children to pass a few hours.
Guests are welcome to stroll through the staff village, past the zebra and giraffe, to the lodge’s community clinic. Say hello to the doctor. Or pop into the community duka (shop) and buy a cold Tusker (local beer).
Angama Mara Dining
Angama Mara draws inspiration from the finest ingredients Kenya has to offer. Beautiful vegetables from the highlands, tropical fruits aplenty from the coast, cheese from a renowned supplier just outside Nairobi, prawns from Malindi, freshwater fish from Lake Victoria, and beef from the north. Kenyan cuisine is deeply influenced by Arab-inspired Swahili dishes from the coast and Indian food from the significant community that has called this country home for many generations.
Enjoy a picnic for 2 on the Out of Africa kopje. Angama breakfast or lunch picnics are also a big hit. Served under a lone tree in the middle of the short grass plains of the Maasai Mara with only giraffe, elephant, and buffalo as dining companions. In the evenings, guests may dine in a lantern lit forest off a barbecue à la carte menu with the calls of hyenas serenading them as they share stories of their day’s adventures on safari.
After a restful night’s sleep, a knock on the door and a butler discreetly leave fresh orange juice, steaming coffee, and a newly baked something in the lobby. All meals can be enjoyed on the tented suite’s deck, at the lodge, by the pool, or, best of all, a Mara picnic in the shade of a lone tree in the middle of nowhere.
There is even a small separate Kosher kitchen at Angama Mara that can prepare meals for up to 12 guests. This includes crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, charcoal grill, cooking top, refrigeration, and washing up facilities and is kept locked at all times other than when in use for our kosher guests.
Gluten-free? Vegan? Soymilk, almond milk? No problem. Low sodium, no garlic, Chinese, food allergies, Halaal? At Angama, food preferences are all in a day’s work.
The Shamba
Angama Mara also has a beautiful one acre kitchen garden, Shamba. Where guests can pick their own vegetables and toss their own salads for lunch. The Shamba is a much loved experience for Angama Mara’s guests. Within easy walking distance of the lodge guests often stop by on their way to or from the Reserve. The shamba keepers welcome guests at the passion fruit arbor which forms the entrance and guide them through the kitchen garden encouraging them to pick and taste along the way. The layout is reminiscent of snakes and ladders and the shamba keepers share the story behind its unique design. This is no ordinary vegetable patch.
The lodge offers private shamba to table lunches in the garden under towering shady moth trees. Guests are free to pick their own ingredients which are then washed and readied for the freshest salads imaginable. Butlers prepare a wicker basket filled with loaves of bread, local cheese, and chilled rosé wine to accompany the salads. Guests are left to while away the afternoon. Taking in sweeping views of the Mara below whilst watching the butterflies dance through the garden.
Angama Foundation
Each guest at Angama Mara contributes a donation to the Angama Foundation, a separate entity that has been set up to support the communities that neighbor the lodge and the wildlife and land that surround it. The Foundation is active in three fields of work: Education, Healthcare, and Conservation. Don’t hesitate to ask us for more information on the amazing community work the Angama Foundation is doing.

And they do it in Maasai style: with beautiful bead work, dancing warriors, extraordinary backdrops, and of course the warmest Kenyan service and hospitality.
Maasai Blessings
Couples either wanting to renew their vows or celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary can do this at an authentic, low key sunset celebration in the Maasai boma or lovely Shamba. The husband will get a Maasai shirt and beaded walking stick. The wife, a traditional beaded skirt, top and beautiful Maasai jewelry. An Out Of Africa Engagement
What could be more romantic than a proposal right on the site of the movie about one of the greatest love stories set in colonial Kenya? Where Out of Africa was filmed. With such a setting they have yet to have a refusal!
Special Birthdays
Whether it’s just a couple traveling together celebrating a milestone birthday. Or a multi-generational gathering of a family clan. The lodge loves to throw a party. A warrior performance is dedicated to the birthday celebrant. For a more discreet celebration, guests can be surprised and spoiled by a champagne picnic for two on the crest of the Out of Africa kopje.
Bar Mitzvahs Maasai Style
During their Bar Mitzvah year, young Jewish men can celebrate their coming of age in the heart of Maasailand. The day starts with a wilderness walk in the company of a Maasai naturalist. He will share his story about his Maasai journey from boyhood to manhood and teach him how to throw a spear and shoot with a bow and arrow. After a hearty breakfast, spend a couple of quiet hours with a Maasai elder in a traditional manyatta (homestead) in the Shamba. He will share his wisdom about this transition. The day is capped in an evening ceremony. When the young man is the guest of honor in the boma and dances with the Maasai warriors. Following this, he is blessed by the elders.
