Last Word Kitara Accommodation
The 6 x Luxury Suites at Last Word Kitara have a view of the Klaserie River. This is a common footpath for much of the local wildlife, especially the elephants. And it is not uncommon to be able to relax on your private patio with a gin and tonic and watch them stroll by. Each suite has an shower and separate Victorian bathtub, and indoor shower. For the more adventurous, there is also an outdoor shower. The classic decor style, inspired by nature, is imbued with dreamy accents of Africa. Retire to your exclusive cocoon, lulled to sleep by the melee of hypnotic nighttime sounds. They all have ceiling fans, air-conditioning and heating. A fully stocked minibar, tea and coffee making facilities and Healing Earth amenities.
All six suites are the same size at 70m² or 750 square feet. An extra bed can be added to these rooms for kids at an extra cost.
Child Policy:
Children from 6 and above are welcome at The Last Word Kitara Camp.
One child may share a suite with 2 full paying adults and will pay 50% of the adult sharing rate. On the game drive vehicles, the child sharing at 50% will be seated in the middle seat.
No children under the age of 16 years are permitted on the guided walks.
Last Word Kitara Activities
Last Word Kitara offers the normal twice daily safari game drives on open vehicles in Big 5 territory. Guided by a highly qualified, engaging ranger team. There are less lodges in the Klaserie than many other private reserves. Hence you encounter fewer other game vehicles when out on drive. This means the experience is more exclusive and unrushed. And you can often spend extended time at quality sightings without having to move on to make space for new arrivals.
Guests have the option of taking part in a guided walking safari as well. Walking safaris follow the path less traveled, usually along a game track or vast Savannah plain.
Because of its location on the riverbanks, the bird life in the area is prolific. Regular birds include the Pied Kingfisher, Southern Carmine Bee-Eater and the Brown-hooded Kingfisher. To name just a few.
Conservation and Sustainability Activities
Participate in an impact activity at The Last Word Kitara and make a real difference. Be it in conservation (dehorning and K9 anti-poaching dog unit). Or for the local communities (school visits). Guests become part of the solution by contributing to the initiatives and being physically involved. They get to be present to see what their efforts are going towards. Another big plus is that guests get to have fun while doing it. As the practical approaches include them and answer all their questions.
Last Word Intimate Hotels & Safari Camps support these conservation and community initiatives in the Greater Kruger area:
The ‘Tembo’ Project
Hosted by the Resource Ecology group of the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, this research project studies the iconic Cape buffalo.
The Eco Children Programs
A non-profit organization initiative educates the local community’s children on the environment, quality education and the importance of both. Visit the local school just outside the reserve to see the importance of this program.
The ‘Save the Elephant’ Project
The project helps protect and track elephants throughout the reserve and Greater Kruger area.
The Ground Hornbill Project
This project uses scientific data to understand the environmental impact on their survival.
K9 anti-poaching dog unit
Wildlife conservation dogs are deployed to perform two primary functions. Firstly substance detection. And secondly to track and pursue fugitives or criminal elements. These qualities are unique to highly trained and skilled K9/handler units and cannot be substituted by humans or other technology. This experience forms part of a fundraising initiative in support of the unit’s sustainability, care and safety of the K9 dogs. It also demonstrates the important function of the K9 pack-units (dogs and handlers).
Rhino Dehorning Activity
With this exciting excursion, guests form part of the on-the-ground conservation team. The vet and warden locate the rhino via a Hope For Wildlife Helicopter Services helicopter. The crew on the ground follow the aircraft. Once found, the excitement mounts as the window for dehorning is time-sensitive. The work is fast-paced. And where necessary, team members assist in some way with the rhino. The vet removes the horn and records the details, all the while monitoring the rhino’s well-being. It is a truly humbling experience to be up close to such a magnificent creature. And to have a hand in assisting the rhinoceros species’ plight.
Kitara’s Security Heli Activity
Guests have the rare opportunity to sponsor and participate in an hour-long security flight on the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Led by a pilot-conservationist, this flight comprises a low-lying heli flip over known corridors where poaching activity may occur. A thrilling aerial safari fueled by conservation. Guests take away unforgettable impressions of the beautiful reserve. And also rare insights gleaned from the pilot-conservationist during the trip. This is exclusive to Last Word Kitara guests.
