In addition, the Northern Tuli Game Reserve has been identified as an Important Bird Area. The ‘green’ season; which is usually November until April dependent on the rains; is a fantastic time for birding. Tuli is home to a large number of resident as well as migrant birds. There are 350 different bird species identified in the area and 90 different species on the lodge grounds.

Each day at Tuli Safari Lodge brings a new adventure. Set your own pace and decide how much or how little you would like to do. Let us know of any special interests. Whether it is photography, art, geology, archaeology, or astronomy; Tuli is the place for you!

Safari Activities at Tuli Safari Lodge

Two guided game activities are included in the nightly rates.

Adventure through the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in one of the open top game viewing vehicles. Or; explore the bush on foot with one of the lodges’ qualified guides. Additional guided walks can be arranged.
Children must be 12 years or older to participate in bush walks.

An optional after dinner game drive is possible if you are keen to try and spot the true nocturnal species.

Lentswe Hide and The Swamp Hide are in close proximity to the lodge. Spend time at these hides with your guide, or on your own with binoculars, drinks, and snacks for company.

Community visit

An opportunity to visit the local village of Mothlabaneng. The tour includes a visit to the school, a unique wine tasting experience at the Lala Palm ‘distillery’; the chance to see traditional basket weaving, a visit to rock art sites, meeting local community members; as well as the opportunity to witness some of the community projects in action.
50% of all community visit activity fees are donated to Tuli’s community fund. This assists with the financing of various community projects.

Self-guided Walking Trail

Enjoy a short self-guided walking trail around the lodge. Starting at the main entrance gate; going through an area of riverine trees down towards the banks of the Limpopo River, across Tuli’s lovely gardens; and back towards the main lodge area.

Mashatu Additional Activities

Guided Walks: $75
Minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests. Children 8 to 12 yrs. must be accompanied by a parent. Children under 8 not permitted

Night Drive: $80
After dinner activity. Minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests

Community Visit: $95
50% of the rate is donated to the community. Minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests

Visit to the Confluence: $80
This is where the Limpopo & Shashe Rivers and Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa meet. Minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests

Exclusive Use Vehicle: $750
Per vehicle per day / bednight. A maximum of 6 guests

Mashatu Adventure Activities (Operated by Mashatu Concessionaire – Horizon)

Cycling Safari: $95
Recommended early morning mountain bike activity. Minimum of 2 and maximum of 8 guests. Children under 12 are not permitted. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult / parent.
Mashatu Tent Camp guests will depart from and return to Mashatu Lodge for their cycling safari. This activity is not available to guests staying at Shalimpo.

Horse Safari: $115
Advanced ride for experienced equestrians only. Minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4 guests. Children under 12 are not permitted. Ad-hoc afternoon horse rides are not available on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This activity is not available to guests staying at Mashatu Tent Camp or Shalimpo. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult / parent who is also an experienced rider. Participation will be at the sole discretion of the Horizon Horseback Mashatu concessionaire after careful consideration. A riding “test” will be conducted before the horse safari and anyone not deemed to be experienced enough will not be allowed to continue the horse ride.

PhotoMashatu Activities

Please note that the Photographic Hides and Lala Limpopo Sleep Out Hide are closed for the months of January, February, and December each year. Children under 12 are not permitted in the Photographic Hides. This activity is not available for guests staying at Shalimpo.

*Families can now book an hour session post morning or pre afternoon game drive at the Matebole Hide. (Includes children under the age of 12). Guests do need to book a private vehicle at an additional cost in order to book the happy hour.

** Includes one optional tutor session per day and one half day AM or PM hide session, coinciding with the use of the Photographic vehicle, subject to availability upon booking. The photographic vehicle is not available for guests staying at Shalimpo. ***Special Offer not available during Peak (High) Season 1st July to 31st October.

Sleep-out Hide

Available from 4 pm to 9 am. A minimum of 2 nights at one of Mashatu’s lodges must be booked to qualify for 1 night at the Sleepout Hide. A maximum of 4 guests and 1 private guide can be accommodated in the Sleepout Hide. The hide has two separate sleeping areas approximately 8 meters apart, with two 3/4 beds in each for a total of four guests. If booking on a shared basis, please note that while guests will have their own sleeping area, they will be sharing the hide and common areas with another couple/single who will occupy the second sleeping area. This activity will replace the afternoon and morning game drives. No children under the age of 16 are permitted unless the sole use of the hide is secured.
