Perched on the highest point of the Crater’s edge, Ngorongoro Explorer by Elewana pairs bold, contemporary design with breathtaking caldera vistas, offering an elevated ‘art of safari’ from the rim of the world. The lodge is due to open in May 2027 (the old Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge).
The heart of the experience is the long, linear design that maximizes uninterrupted views of the crater from every vantage point. The lodge’s architecture is defined by a sequence of intimate, atmospheric environments. Each with its own distinct mood and materiality. From the quiet sophistication of the wine cellar and the curated treasures of the boutique to the vibrant energy of the bar. These smaller spaces provide a sense of warmth and protection from the area’s dramatic climate. While the expansive observation deck offers a front row seat to one of the world’s most iconic wonders. Balancing luxury with multi-generational accessibility.
As soon as we have more images (closer to opening time), we will add them.

Ngorongoro Explorer by Elewana Accommodation
Ngorongoro Explorer by Elewana has 84 rooms. Each one is a private theater to “Africa’s Eden”. 78 (74 + 4) are Safari Rooms which are ideal for couples, solo travelers, or friends. Four of these are fully accessible with step-free entryways, wider clearance layouts, and fully adapted, wheelchair-friendly wet rooms.
There are 6 Family Suites allowing for seamless multi-generational travel. They feature expansive shared spaces alongside private sleeping quarters. Giving parents or grandparents peace and quiet while keeping the children close by.
The room styling is inspired by the surrounding volcanic elements. Moving away from old-fashioned, heavy safari decor toward a crisp, light, and modern design. These rooms feature dramatic floor to ceiling glass fronts that lead out to private viewing balconies. They all are positioned to face the caldera for taking in the golden highland sunsets. Ensuring that no guest misses out on the iconic rim view. Expect clean lines, warm natural wood textures, and minimalist African design accents that frame the crater views without distracting from them. Rooms have plush bedding with a nightly turndown service, and cozy seating areas carefully positioned to face the glass-fronted views. Hot beverage stations feature local Tanzanian coffee and teas.
Bathrooms have luxury rain showers with modern, new age water saving fixtures, ample vanity counter space, and premium Eco-friendly amenities.
There is complimentary high speed WIFI, writing desks, and multiple dedicated charging hubs (USB and international sockets) for cameras, tablets, and phones.
Ngorongoro Explorer by Elewana Family Safari
Unlike many luxury rim-side lodges that enforce a minimum age limit (often 6 or 12 years old), Ngorongoro Explorer has no age restrictions.
The Safari Rooms can accommodate a maximum of 2 x adults and 1 x child (under 12) using an extra rollaway bed/sleeper sofa. Or 3 x adults. The Family Suites are typically for 2 x adults and 2 x children (with options to add extra bedding for larger immediate families).
Select Safari Rooms feature connecting doors. This is perfect for families with older kids (12–17) who want their own space but need to remain attached to the parents’ room.
Tailored, kid-approved dining options are available across the restaurants. Along with highly flexible, personalized meal times to accommodate early bedtimes or sudden toddler hunger pangs.

This means there is no need for parents to worry about their kids disrupting other travelers on a shared vehicle.
There is a supervised space offering nature themed crafts, animal track casting, beadwork, and storytelling at the Children’s Bushcraft Centre. There are guided nature and birding walks within the secure, fenced boundaries of the lodge for kids. Safe for all ages.
Kids also love the cinema which screens family-friendly wildlife documentaries and movies in the afternoons and early evenings. Plus babysitting Services are available on request. Giving parents a chance to relax at the spa or the wine cellar.
Ngorongoro Explorer by Elewana Activities
Take in a bird’s-eye view of the world’s most iconic amphitheater, enjoy sunsets from the highest point on the rim, and immerse yourself in a modern sanctuary designed for discovery. There’s plenty to do…
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. Often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” it is famous for its incredible density of wildlife and is one of the best places in Africa to spot the endangered black rhino alongside the rest of the Big Five. Visitors can expect to see a permanent population of over 25,000 large mammals, including massive bull elephants and prides of lions that roam the crater floor.
The landscape is a sanctuary for bird enthusiasts, with more than 500 recorded species. The alkaline waters of Lake Magadi are often transformed into a sea of pink by thousands of flamingos. While the surrounding highland forests are home to specialized species like the Tacazze Sunbird. From the golden grasslands to the lush fever tree forests, the Crater offers a spectacular and diverse display of life in one of the most iconic settings on earth.

Day Excursions Lake Manyara National Park or Olduvai Gorge
Lake Manyara National Park has an astounding variety of landscapes for its relatively smaller size compared to other well known parks on the Northern Tanzanian circuit. From dense forests to soda lake wetlands, open grasslands, and acacia thickets, the variety is superseded only by the variety of wildlife found throughout.
In each variety of landscape, unique animals are found. From bush buck and blue monkeys in the forest, antelopes, and cheetahs in the grasslands, hippos, and flamingos in the wetlands, and tree-climbing lions and elephants in the acacia woodlands.
Olduvai Gorge is one of the most important paleo-anthropological sites in East Africa and is famed as the place where Louis and Mary Leakey made some of the most important discoveries of early hominids. A still active excavation site, visit the place where some of the earliest hominids lived and breathed.
Empakaai Crater
For those with an extra day or so at Ngorongoro Explorer, it is a great idea to visit Empakaai Crater. This is only a 90-minute drive from the lodge. With a diameter of only 6km, Empakaai is smaller than Ngorongoro, but equally beautiful. Spend a full day here and you can walk down onto the crater floor to look out for birds and monkeys in the forest. On a clear day you can see Lake Natron and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Sustainability at Ngorongoro Explorer is rooted in a circular ecosystem, where food waste is transformed into organic fertilizer for the on-site culinary gardens. These gardens, in turn, supply the kitchens with fresh, seasonal produce, reducing their carbon footprint. With a zero-tolerance policy on single-use plastics and waste sorted at the source, they ensure the environmental impact is meticulously managed. As signatories of the Glasgow Declaration and certified by Responsible Tourism Tanzania, they maintain the highest standards of ecological stewardship through regular Land & Life Foundation audits.
Beyond Elewana’s environmental initiatives, they are deeply committed to the Ngorongoro region through long standing partnerships. Specifically their support of Ganako Primary School. They contribute to vital infrastructure development and provide essential donations to enhance the learning environment for local students. By integrating these social investments with their recycling partnerships, they ensure that their presence creates a lasting, positive legacy for both the land and the people of this historic highland estate. This includes glass repurposing through the Shanga social enterprise. Shanga employs people with disabilities to create unique and high-quality handmade jewelry, glassware and homewares incorporating recycled materials.
