Okuti (Okavango Delta)
Creating seamless travel in Africa since 2004
A Botswana family safari is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect. Unplugging from screens and enjoying Africa’s incredible beauty together. Botswana is an especially magical destination for family adventures. Most family itineraries have short flights* between destinations so it is easier to keep kids happy. Besides that, the wildlife is what really sets Botswana above many other family-friendly safari destinations.
Saying that we recommend it for children from 6 years of age. Kids will have lifetime memories.
*The luggage limit is generally around 33 lbs (15 kg) per person, and bags must be soft-sided.
Botswana offers a variety of experiences suitable for families, often combining land and water activities.
A must see destination, famous for its intricate waterways and diverse wildlife. Activities include:
Mokoro rides: Traditional dugout canoe trips offer a peaceful way to explore the delta.
Walking safaris: Led by experienced guides, these are a great way to learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem, such as animal tracks and plants.
Boating: Motorized boat trips allow you to cover more ground and spot hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species.
Known for its massive elephant herds. River cruises on the Chobe River are a highlight. Offering up-close views of elephants, hippos, and other animals coming to drink.
For a different experience, explore the vast salt pans. Family-friendly activities here include quad biking and meerkats safaris.
Discover the unique desert ecosystem. With opportunities for game drives and cultural interactions with the San Bushmen.
The best time for a family safari in Botswana is during the dry winter season, from May to October.
This is when there is optimal wildlife viewing as animals congregate around limited water sources. Making them easier to spot. The weather is cooler and more comfortable for game drives. Especially for younger children. It is also a low-risk period for malaria.
The shoulder seasons of April-May and November can also be a good option, offering lush green scenery, fewer people, and lower prices.
The wet season (December-March) is less popular for big game viewing. But it’s an excellent time for bird watching and seeing newborn animals.
Please note that Botswana still requires families with children under 18 to present original unabridged birth certificates and affidavits if both parents are not traveling together. Make sure you plan ahead and check the requirements to ensure a seamless journey.
