Maxa is a rare, small safari camp, focused on exploration within a seldom seen, beautiful corner of the Okavango Delta. Nestled under a canopy of towering Ebony, marula, and leadwood trees. Maxa overlooks the large, Maxa Lagoon which is alive with hippos and birdlife. In the North Eastern reaches of the Okavango Delta, at the source of the Selinda Spillway. The landscape consists of a network of permanent lagoons which are fed by ephemeral channels. And connect to expansive grassy floodplains and riverine woodland islands. A rich diversity of wildlife inhabits the area, assuring guests of an exciting and immersive safari experience. This fascinating area is in the heart of the Kaza Transfrontier Park (an area half the size of California).
The philosophy of Maxa centers around exploration, learning and the freedom to be immersed in nature. The camp’s unique appearance captures this with a freeform separated lounge and dining area. Set under light canvas roofs, partially enclosed by traditional clay walls. The design is complemented with handmade local furniture which lends a creative spirit to the decor and lighting.
At the edge of the camp’s riverine forest tree overlooking the lagoon is another cluster of Ebony trees, forming a natural enclosure. Here, a Sala with a cushioned day bed is complemented by an elevated deck. With a suspended cargo net hammock bedecked with an array of pillows and cushions, from where guests can take in the beautiful surrounds.
The Maxa area is fed by strong waters coming from the Okavango panhandle. These clear waterways promise exceptional mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and countless clear, safe, and shallow swim spots.
It has a strong sustainability footprint. It is Eco Tourism certified, 100% solar-powered, using local materials with a low-impact ethos.

Maxa Accommodation
Maxa accommodates just 12 guests in five tents, which includes a family tent. The tented rooms are practical, yet comfortable. With four beautifully designed stretch canvas tents on decks. Comprising an en suite indoor bathroom as well as full outdoor open-air bathroom.
Maxa Family Safaris
Maxa is ideal for children (from 6 years) and multi-generational safaris. The Maxa family tent has two bedrooms and a shared en suite bathroom along with an outdoor bathroom. The emphasis for kids is on learning how to track wildlife. Recognizing different animal spoor. Both on foot and in 4×4 safari vehicles. Kids learn how to make small animal traps and start a fire from nothing more than two sticks. The children also learn how to:
Identify a range of birds;
Try their hand at poling a Mokoro (subject to water levels);
Drive a game drive vehicle;
Fish;
Shoot an air rifle at tin cans.
On completion of the safari, children receive a Young Explorers certificate, t-shirt, and cap.
A dedicated specialist guide is available for families.
Maxa Activities
Camp excursions include mokoro (dugout canoe), guided walking safaris and nature drives (both by day and night). Activities also incorporate local cultural insights with the exploration of the natural heritage of this immensely diverse region.
Witness the extraordinary biodiversity of the Okavango Delta with expert guides on game drives. Where you will encounter a vast array of wildlife. Including elephants, sable antelope, lechwe and a resident coalition of lions.
A guided walking safari teaches you about the finer details of the bush. From animal tracks and medicinal plants to the behaviors of smaller creatures.
Glide down the Delta channels on a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) seeing aquatic life and the many bird species. Without engine noise.
Visit the neighboring community for enriching insights into the traditions and customs of the local community. The Bukakhwe people have long called this region home.
Every day at Maxa is curated as a day of exploration.
Helicopter Over the Delta
Moments after departing camp you’ll enjoy the breathtaking views seen only from a helicopter. Experience the crystal clear water channels meandering their way through lagoons. Journey deep into the lush green flood plains. Exploring some of the many animal species of the Okavango region.
