Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp and Under Canvas Activities
Nxabega is located on an exclusive 25,000 hectare (61,775 acre) wildlife concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. Being on a private concession (NG27A) of only a few camps, means that there are not many other vehicles. Ideally positioned to explore the magnificence of the Okavango Delta. You have the priceless opportunity to discover the myriad wildlife wonders of this diverse land and water Okavango camp.
Included Activities
Game drives
Set out in search of the Delta rich wildlife, including its semi-aquatic antelopes, the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga antelope. Search for the area’s predators. From lion prides to cheetah, leopard and African wild dog. Explore the open woodlands in search of roan and sable antelope. Or keep an eye out for graceful giraffes and frisky zebras on the floodplains. On the edges of the Delta, where land blurs with water, marvel at breeding herds of that elephant splash gently through shallow channels.
Afternoon drives continue into the night, allowing for nocturnal wildlife encounters. Look out for the rarely spotted serval and pangolin. Or watch the moon reflect off the backs of a family of hippo coming out of the water to graze.
Guided Walking Safari
Experience this private concession on foot. Free from the constraints of roads and vehicles. Discover the complexities of tracking. How every bent blade of grass and imprint in the soil has a meaning. Observe how your guide interprets the signs and sounds of the bush. Smell and taste wild herbs, as your guide explains their traditional uses. Explore the small miracles of the bush, from the magnificent tapestry of a spider’s web to the microscopic world of the dung beetle.
Listen for the alarm call of the grey go-away bird. Watch for the iridescent flight-sparkle of the lilac breasted roller. Or use your Swarovski Optik binoculars to zoom in on the dark shape of a brown snake eagle perched regally on the high branches of a dead tree. Look out for the bright red bill of a grey-headed kingfisher, as it perches silently on a branch watching the ground for insects or small lizards.
This is a dynamic experience guaranteed to captivate and engage all your senses.
Birding Safari
A diverse habitat with over 400 species recorded in the area. A great place to see the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
Mokoro (dugout canoe) and motorized boat cruises*
Explore the Okavango Delta’s intricate network of winding channels and glassy lagoons onboard a motorized boat that covers great distances. Or on a traditionally made mokoro boat. The unique perspective from the boat/mokoro offers great sightings of waterbirds; such as herons, colorful bee-eaters, owls, and kingfishers. Tiny reed frogs cling to stilt like grasses; creating colorful dots along the water’s surface. Encounter grazing herds of rare swamp-dwelling sitatunga and red lechwe antelope. While crocodiles and hippos wade nearby. As well as elephants that tower over islands fringed with palms. Watch in awe as these majestic beasts submerge neck-deep, swimming through a network of reeds. All under the watchful eye of the elegant African fish eagle.
Fishing*
Seasonal catch and release fishing excursions take place in the Panhandle region. Where the Okavango River feeds into the labyrinth of channels and lagoons that make up the heart of the Delta wetland. Try your hand at catching an engaging variety of fish that include the predatory tigerfish.
*Seasonal and subject to water levels
Activities at an additional charge
Helicopter flips over the Okavango Delta
Take to the air in a helicopter. With many of the Delta’s remote areas generally inaccessible; an aerial perspective is one of the best ways to get a true feeling of its vastness. With the doors removed, keen photographers have unrestricted views of the unfolding vistas. Soar above pods of hippo sleeping the day away in the depths of a lagoon. Watch a herd of elephants slowly amble along open grasslands. Or marvel at the fleet moves of red lechwe antelope as they leap through a fringe of papyrus reeds in the shallows.
